A significant milestone in Lakewood’s economic landscape is on the horizon as preparations commence for the groundbreaking of a major development project. The project, a collaboration between CASTO Communities and North Pointe Realty, entails a mixed-use development valued at $115 million, set to rise on the 5.7-acre site of the former Lakewood Hospital.
Officials have announced that the ribbon cutting ceremony, marking the start of construction, is anticipated to take place shortly. Lakewood Mayor Meghan George expressed enthusiasm about the project’s progress, noting the extensive efforts that have led to this point. “We’re very excited to see the project finally come to fruition,” she stated. “It’s been a long time coming. We’ve been working hard for many years. We had a couple of false starts but are very excited for the city to get this once-in-a-generation development.”
Project Overview and Features
The development, originally estimated at $90 million, has expanded in scope and detail. It will feature approximately 24,750 square feet of retail space in the first building, alongside an additional 6,600 square feet within the existing Curtis Block building. A public plaza and community space spanning 17,000 square feet will be included, along with 298 units of mixed-income rental apartments and seven for-sale townhomes.
Plans for the site also encompass enhancements to the streetscape and pathways, renovations of the Curtis Block building, and the establishment of a northern entry and exit point from the parking garage located off Belle Road. The garage will provide 567 spaces, with a minimum of 100 spaces designated for public use and 75 spaces allocated to the Cleveland Clinic.
Community Impact and Future Prospects
The new development is designed to improve pedestrian connectivity between the residential buildings and the parking garage, featuring a small plaza and a pocket park adjacent to the southern apartment building that will house the new townhomes. Mayor George highlighted the positive community sentiment surrounding the project, stating, “The community is excited to see this project start. This is going to be a good overall development for our downtown.”
Construction is expected to span several years, but the anticipation among residents remains high. The project represents a significant investment in Lakewood’s future, promising to transform the area into a vibrant mixed-use hub.
