FBI Director Kash Patel publicly responded to growing tensions between the Justice Department and the FBI regarding the handling of documents related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. On Saturday, Patel rejected claims of internal strife and dismissed what he termed “conspiracy theories” surrounding the decision not to release any further files on Epstein.

Patel’s comments followed a memo from Attorney General Pam Bondi stating that the DOJ would not publish additional documents related to Epstein, including the assertion that a so-called “client list” does not exist. This announcement triggered backlash among conservative commentators and members of the Trump base, who have demanded Bondi’s resignation. In a post on X, Patel expressed his dedication to serving under President Donald Trump, stating, “It’s an honor to serve the President of the United States @realDonaldTrump — and I’ll continue to do so for as long as he calls on me.”

Reports indicate that Patel and FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino have been engaged in discussions with Bondi over the fallout from the DOJ’s memo. Multiple sources, including CNN and Axios, have suggested that Bongino may resign due to the ongoing controversy. The internal conflict highlights a significant disagreement on how to manage the Epstein files, which continue to be a focal point for scrutiny.

Patel’s mention of “conspiracy theories” raises questions about whether he was addressing the allegations of discord within the FBI and DOJ or the broader conspiracy theories surrounding Epstein, which he previously promoted. Notably, Todd Blanche, Deputy Attorney General, stated that both Patel and Bongino approved the contents of the memo, asserting that claims of discord are “patently false.”

As the situation unfolds, it remains uncertain whether Bongino will follow through with any plans to step down. Sources have indicated that he has not yet made a definitive decision. The pressure on Bondi is mounting, particularly as Trump’s supporters continue to express dissatisfaction with her handling of the Epstein documents.

During a Cabinet meeting, Trump himself downplayed the Epstein issue, remarking, “I mean, I can’t believe you’re asking a question on Epstein at a time like this, where we’re having some of the greatest success and also tragedy.” His dismissive tone reflects a broader strategy to sidestep the controversy surrounding Epstein, despite his past connections to the financier.

In an effort to ease tensions with right-wing figures, Bondi announced the dismissal of charges against a plastic surgeon accused of fraud related to COVID-19 vaccines, crediting Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene for her advocacy on the matter. Greene has been vocal about the Epstein memo, calling for transparency and the release of documents, while claiming they have been suppressed.

Patel’s history of advocating for the release of Epstein-related files complicates his current position. In a December 2023 podcast, he accused the Biden administration of withholding information due to the identities of individuals involved. He stated, “You don’t think that Bill Gates is lobbying Congress night and day to prevent the disclosure of that list?”

Despite his previous assertions, Patel has taken a firmer stance on the matter recently. In May, while addressing conspiracy theories suggesting that Epstein was murdered in prison, he confirmed that Epstein died by suicide, suggesting that those who believe otherwise misunderstand the circumstances.

The FBI has acknowledged the need for transparency regarding the Epstein case. Patel previously stated, “We are diligently working on that,” while emphasizing that reviewing extensive investigations takes time.

Epstein’s history of abusing numerous women between 2002 and 2018, and his connections to high-profile individuals, continue to spark public interest. His alleged network of underage victims and his 2019 indictment for sex trafficking have kept the case in the spotlight, with many calling for the release of a comprehensive list detailing his connections, even as officials maintain that no such list exists.

The Trump administration pledged transparency concerning Epstein files but has faced criticism over the execution of this promise. Bondi’s earlier claims of future document releases have yet to materialize into actionable timelines, and she has publicly blamed the FBI for withholding information.

As the controversy evolves, the implications for both the FBI and the DOJ remain significant, with both agencies under scrutiny from the public and political figures alike.
