Peter A. Rubando, founder of Giant Floor and Wall and a vital figure in the Wyoming Valley community, passed away on January 12, 2026, in North Palm Beach, FL. His entrepreneurial spirit, generosity, and unwavering optimism left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
Born on May 25, 1937, in Trenton, NJ, Peter was a proud first-generation Italian American, the son of Andrew and Esther Rubando. He demonstrated leadership early in life, serving as co-captain of his football team at Trenton Catholic. His affinity for customer service began at Pete’s Steak House, where he learned the value of connecting with people.
Building a Legacy in Wyoming Valley
After a stint as a territory salesman, Peter fell in love with the Wyoming Valley and, in April 1965, took a “leap of faith” by incorporating Giant Floor in Wilkes-Barre. His commitment to the community was particularly evident during the 1972 Agnes Flood, when he worked tirelessly to assist neighbors in need. This dedication inspired the company’s promise: “We will always be here to serve you.”
Under Peter’s visionary leadership, Giant Floor expanded significantly throughout the region. Despite his achievements, he always credited his employees for the company’s growth, celebrating their successes as his own. This sense of community and teamwork defined his approach to business.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Peter was a devoted family man. He cherished his role as a loving husband to Katie Rubando and a supportive father to his four children: Peter (Lisa), Mark (Doni), David (Jeanne), and Amy McGee (Mike). He also embraced his role as a stepfather to Abby Lee (Raymond) and Chris Rossi (Ida), and took pride in being a grandfather to ten and a great-grandfather to one.
A Life of Generosity and Adventure
Peter’s zest for life was matched only by his generosity. He established the Andrew Rubando Scholarship at King’s College in 1984, providing opportunities for students to pursue their education. His commitment to philanthropy was a cornerstone of his character, reflecting his deep love for his community.
An avid golfer and lifelong fitness enthusiast, Peter embraced a vibrant lifestyle. He and Katie traveled the world together, driven by his youthful curiosity and desire for adventure. His eternal optimism was infectious, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.
Peter A. Rubando’s spirit lives on in the family he cherished and the business he built with passion and integrity. He is survived by his wife, sister Marie Mattonelli, children, stepchildren, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Tom.
A memorial date and time will be announced in the near future. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Mind, Music and Movement Foundation.
