Carolyn Whitmire, a beloved educator and community figure, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was 83 years old. Carolyn’s life journey began on January 10, 1942, in Ukiah, California, where she grew up with her parents, Joe and Stella, and her siblings, Joan and Calvert.

Throughout her life, Carolyn was known for her commitment to education and her unwavering dedication to her students. A graduate of Humboldt State University, she spent many years working with Eureka City Schools, focusing on empowering students from diverse backgrounds, including those in the gifted program and resource education. Her passion for teaching left a lasting impact on countless individuals in her community.

A Life of Generosity and Advocacy

Carolyn’s vibrant personality and curiosity about different cultures made her a cherished friend and a respected advocate. Her generosity extended beyond her family and friends; she was known to help those in need, offering support to complete strangers. A courageous advocate for racial equality, Carolyn stood firm in her beliefs, often at great personal risk, during times when such stances were not widely accepted.

In addition to her professional pursuits, Carolyn enjoyed various hobbies. She was a licensed private pilot, an accomplished horsewoman, and even trained her dogs for agility competitions. Her lively spirit shone through in her role as a hostess, where she regularly organized large gatherings for her husband Fred’s colleagues and supporters at local institutions, including the College of the Redwoods and Humboldt State.

Carolyn is survived by her loving husband, Fred, and their children, Deborah Davids and Phillip Whitmire, along with her grandchildren, Sebastian and Nathaniel Whitmire. She also held a special place in her heart for Phillip Webb, whom she mothered deeply.

Final Services and Remembrance

To honor Carolyn’s memory, graveside services will take place on August 6, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Russian River Cemetery District located at 940 Low Gap Road, Ukiah, CA 95482. A lunch reception will follow at Left Coast Seafood Restaurant, 110 W. Standley St. in Ukiah.

Additionally, a memorial service will be held at First Covenant Church, 2526 J St. in Eureka on August 8, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with refreshments available after the service. The community is invited to attend both events to celebrate Carolyn’s life and legacy.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the following organizations: Humboldt Spay/Neuter Clinic, located at 2606 Myrtle Avenue, Eureka, CA 95501, and Hospice of Mendocino, Adventist Health, located at 100 Sanhedrin Circle, Willits, CA 95490.
