Becky Lynch, the current WWE Women’s Intercontinental Champion, is gearing up for a highly anticipated title rematch against Lyra Valkyria at WWE SummerSlam on August 5, 2025. In an exclusive interview with Michael Cole, Lynch spoke candidly about her evolution in the wrestling industry and her determination to maintain her dominance in the ring.
Reflecting on her journey, Lynch recalled her feelings in 2015 when she often felt like an afterthought compared to her peers. “About 10 years ago, I just remember being so unsure of my position in this company, but so sure of my potential,” she said. She noted that during that time, the spotlight was primarily on wrestlers like Charlotte Flair. “Well, it ain’t featuring Becky anymore, is it?” she asserted, emphasizing her current standing as a central figure in WWE.
Lynch’s attitude toward her fans and critics has shifted, but she attributes this change to their perception. “My attitude didn’t change. The people’s attitude changed towards me, and they broke my heart,” she stated. She has fought for her supporters over the years and now feels compelled to embrace their negative views. “So now The Man is gonna hold everybody else down,” she declared, indicating a fierce resolve as she prepares for her upcoming match.
As for her opponent, Valkyria, Lynch had strong words to share. “Lyra lit up when I walked out there. Looked like she was gonna cry,” she noted, referring to their prior interactions. Lynch acknowledged Valkyria’s achievements, indicating that she inadvertently helped her rise to prominence. “I had just made her a double champion and just ruined it. She has to be taught a lesson,” she explained, drawing a parallel between her approach to wrestling and tough love.
Lynch sees herself as the “gatekeeper of opportunities,” a role she takes seriously. “This title is the workhorse championship and that’s what I am,” she said. She believes that she can significantly impact the careers of other wrestlers, further enhancing the prestige of the championship. “Look at Lyra. She was a fine little champion, but look at her now; I have still elevated her like nothing else has,” Lynch emphasized her influence within the sport.
The title defense will take place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, during a No Disqualification match, promising an intense and unpredictable showdown. Fans can catch the action live on Peacock in the U.S. and on Netflix internationally.
As the WWE landscape continues to evolve, Lynch’s fierce commitment to her role and her championship reign sets the stage for an electrifying contest at SummerSlam. With her sights firmly set on victory, she aims not only to defend her title but also to reaffirm her dominance in the world of professional wrestling.
