A new art exhibit titled “Through My Lens” by photographer and poet Ann Gorman will open on August 8, 2023, at the Lakeview Gallery in the Watermark Art Center, located at 505 Bemidji Ave. N. This exhibit celebrates the success of biodiverse gardening through a unique combination of photography and poetry, illustrating Gorman’s insights inspired by monarch butterflies she encountered in her backyard.
The exhibit delves into the intricate lifecycle of the monarch butterfly, showcasing its journey from larva to adulthood. It highlights not only the challenges faced by this species but also the multiple generations that flourish in Minnesota each year. A particular focus is given to the remarkable “super generation” that migrates to Mexico in the fall and returns north in the spring.
“The exhibit tells the compelling story of the monarch butterfly’s lifecycle and its migration journey,” a release from the Watermark Art Center stated. Each photograph displayed is complemented by a poem, which aims to give voice to the monarch butterfly, allowing visitors to form an emotional connection with the species and its struggles. The poems expand on the narratives behind each still image, inviting deeper contemplation.
A reception for the exhibit will occur from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the opening day, August 8. During this event, Gorman will deliver a talk at 6 p.m., offering attendees further insights into her work and the inspirations behind it.
“Through My Lens” will remain on display until September 27, 2023. The Watermark galleries are free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, providing an accessible opportunity for art lovers and nature enthusiasts to engage with Gorman’s work.
