On October 23, 2023, UC San Diego Health inaugurated the McGrath Outpatient Pavilion at its Hillcrest campus, marking a significant milestone in the redevelopment of the 62-acre medical facility. This new 250,000-square-foot center aims to enhance access to diagnostic, treatment, surgical, and cancer care services for the community.

Investment in Community Health

“We are excited to open this new space, which reflects our dedication to advancing academic medicine, enabling us to educate, research and serve our community with impact,” said Pradeep K. Khosla, Chancellor of UC San Diego. He emphasized that the pavilion will empower future medical leaders to deliver innovative and compassionate healthcare. The project received substantial support from community donors, including a $25 million contribution from Laurie McGrath and the McGrath Family Foundation.

In addition to the McGrath Family’s donation, Price Philanthropies and the Price family contributed $10 million to establish the Barbara Parker, MD, Breast Center and fund the Price Philanthropies Foundation Plaza. Other notable supporters include Carol and Jeff Chang and the Health Sciences Board of Advisors, who helped name the Steven R. Garfin, MD, Orthopaedic Surgery Clinic.

Advanced Facilities and Future Plans

The pavilion features state-of-the-art facilities, including ambulatory surgery suites, operating rooms, and advanced imaging technologies. It also houses a multi-specialty cancer clinic, a breast center, an infusion clinic, and enhanced radiation therapy capabilities, further expanding the services of the Moores Cancer Center.

“This is our first significant investment aimed at dramatically increasing access to our world-class cancer services,” stated Patty Maysent, CEO of UC San Diego Health. She noted that the McGrath Outpatient Pavilion represents a new model of excellence in integrated, multidisciplinary care, combining clinical trials and exceptional treatment under one roof.

The facility also incorporates artwork from local San Diego artists and features a cashier-less shop, enhancing the patient experience. The opening of the McGrath Pavilion is the first phase of a larger redevelopment project for the Hillcrest Medical Campus, which will also include a new 1,850-space parking structure with an underground connection to the pavilion.

Looking ahead, UC San Diego Health plans to introduce workforce housing, retail services, and expansive green spaces as part of the ongoing Hillcrest redevelopment efforts. “My motivation to give to UC San Diego Health stemmed from more than its advanced diagnostics and treatments,” shared Laurie McGrath. “I was profoundly moved by the doctors and caregivers and wanted others in the community to have access to this same top care.”

The McGrath Outpatient Pavilion not only signifies a major advancement in healthcare services for the Hillcrest area but also reflects the commitment of UC San Diego Health to provide high-quality medical care to the community.
