The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA is commemorating its 75th anniversary with a special adoption event on August 2, 2023. For one day only, all pets available for adoption will have a fee of just 75 cents. The event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Lantos Center for Compassion in Burlingame, California, invites the community to welcome a new furry friend.
In addition to the low adoption fees, the shelter will host festivities from noon to 4 p.m., featuring games and complimentary treats for attendees. Special merchandise, including T-shirts and other items, will also be available for purchase in the shelter’s Furchandise store. Adopters should arrive by 5 p.m. to ensure same-day adoption.
The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA has played a crucial role in uniting pets with families since its inception. This event not only reflects their long-standing commitment to animal welfare but also aims to encourage the community to consider adopting pets.
Art Installation Explores American Identity
Simultaneously, the Redwood City Improvement Association, in partnership with Fung Collaboratives, is presenting an art installation titled “Coming Home.” This exhibition, created by Bay Area artist Ryan Carrington, is located at the Art Kiosk at 2208 Broadway and will be on display until September 7, 2023.
Carrington’s work examines the evolving concept of the American Dream through various symbols of Americana and the experiences of both blue- and white-collar workers. His installation features American flags crafted from uniforms, as well as pieces that pay tribute to family members, such as “Grandma Mae” and “Larry.” These works aim to honor the past while fostering hope for the future of American identity.
As a teaching professor at Santa Clara University, Carrington draws from his own background in a working-class family, infusing his art with a deep respect for labor and craftsmanship. An artist reception for “Coming Home” is scheduled for September 6, 2023, at 4 p.m.. For more details, interested individuals can visit the Fung Collaboratives website.
Together, these events highlight the importance of community engagement and the celebration of both animal welfare and artistic expression in the Bay Area.
