
URGENT UPDATE: Roy P. Fischer, a beloved educator and community leader from Uniontown, PA, has passed away at the age of 79. He died on July 24, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family, leaving a profound void in the hearts of many.
Known for his unwavering faith and commitment to education, Roy was a cherished member of the Third Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and actively contributed to his community. His passing has sent shockwaves through the local community, where he was recognized not only as a teacher but also as a leader in youth development.
Born on July 4, 1946, Roy was the son of the late Roy O. Fischer and Virginia Friend Fischer. He graduated from South Union High School in 1964 and earned his teaching degree from California University. He furthered his education with post-graduate studies at Penn State University and West Virginia University, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to learning.
Roy taught Science and Social Studies in the Laurel Highlands School District, positively impacting countless students. He also served as the Treasurer for the Fayette School Employees Credit Union and was a dedicated Boy Scout Leader for Troop 608, fostering leadership and community service among young scouts.
In addition to his professional achievements, Roy was a visionary who founded the Laurel Highlands Jumonville Outdoor School, providing outdoor educational experiences for students. His passion for teaching and mentoring will be remembered by those whose lives he touched.
Roy is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Linda Reitz Fischer, along with their children: David Fischer (Melissa), Donald Fischer (Sarah), and Matthew Fischer (Ashley); daughters Laura Cooper (Matthew) and Holly Stewart (James); as well as his brother, Robert Fischer, and sister, Joyce Murray (David). He leaves behind a legacy of love through his grandchildren: Carrigan, Greyson, Adelaide, Benjamin, Caleb, Moriah, Elijah, Annabelle, James, and Karis.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Andrew D. Ferguson Funeral Home & Crematories, Inc., located at 80 Morgantown St., Uniontown, PA. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects on Sunday, July 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A visitation will also be held at Abundant Life Church on July 28, from 10 to 11 a.m., before the service begins.
The funeral will be officiated by Pastor Garrett Howard and Pastor Mac Reed. Interment will follow at Sylvan Heights Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Roy’s memory to the Laurel Highlands Academic Foundation for the Jumonville Outdoor School, addressed to Joanne Phillian, 70 Wiggins Lane, Uniontown PA 15401.
