The University of Dubuque Theological Seminary is set to host two significant church leaders next month as part of its ongoing Woods Lecture Series. On August 5, 2023, Bishop Kennetha J. Bigham-Tsai, the episcopal leader of the Iowa Conference United Methodist Church and co-bishop of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference UMC, will deliver a sermon. Following her, Rev. Tony Larson, co-moderator of the 226th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA), will preach on August 12, 2023.

These events aim to address the theme “The Church’s Witness in the World.” Each session is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. in Blades Chapel on the UD campus. Attendees can expect a worship service followed by an insightful sermon during both visits.

The seminary will also facilitate a luncheon at 11:45 a.m. after each sermon, providing an opportunity for participants to engage further with the speakers. A question-and-answer segment will follow the luncheons, allowing attendees to explore the topics discussed in greater depth.

These events are open to the public at no cost, although those interested in attending the luncheons are encouraged to register by August 1, 2023. Registration can be completed by emailing [email protected].

The engagement of such prominent figures in religious discussions underscores the seminary’s commitment to fostering dialogue within the community and beyond. The visits by Bishop Bigham-Tsai and Rev. Larson highlight the importance of inter-denominational conversations as the church navigates its role in contemporary society.

This initiative reflects the seminary’s broader mission to stimulate thoughtful discourse on significant issues facing the church today. The University of Dubuque Theological Seminary stands as a platform for leaders to share insights and inspire congregations to engage meaningfully with the world around them.
