State Representative Giovanni Capriglione of Texas, a prominent anti-abortion Republican, has been embroiled in controversy following allegations of funding abortions during an extramarital affair. The accusations surfaced shortly after Capriglione announced he would not seek reelection. Current Revolt, a conservative news outlet, published an interview with Alex Grace, a former exotic dancer, who claims to have had a 17-year relationship with the lawmaker.

In the interview, Grace stated that Capriglione paid for “meetups” and allegedly financed “several abortions for his own personal gain.” While she refrained from providing specific details about these claims, Grace emphasized the seriousness of her allegations, stating, “you’re just going to have to go with my word.” The interview, lasting 25 minutes, was released on Friday.

In response, Capriglione confirmed that he had an affair “years ago,” but vehemently denied the other allegations, categorically stating they were “false and easily disproven.” He asserted that he had “never, nor would I ever, pay for an abortion.” Capriglione is currently serving his seventh term, representing a district in North Texas, and has 18 months remaining in his legislative role.

Political Fallout and Legislative Impact

The timing of these allegations is notable, as the Texas Legislature is currently in a special session addressing various issues, including flood relief and redistricting. On Thursday, Capriglione was absent from the House floor. Shortly after the allegations were made public, fellow Republican Briscoe Cain called for Capriglione’s resignation and requested an investigation by the House General Investigating Committee. Speaker of the House Dustin Burrows did not comment on the matter.

Capriglione has been recognized for his leadership in technology-related legislation, including chairing the Innovation and Technology Caucus and authoring the Data Privacy and Security Act of 2023. He played a key role in the establishment of the Texas Cyber Command, following directives from Governor Greg Abbott. Furthermore, in 2021, he was instrumental in passing a “trigger ban” that outlawed nearly all abortions in Texas after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Violating this law can lead to severe penalties, including life imprisonment.

In his statement, Capriglione attributed the allegations to his efforts in holding “the wealthy, the powerful, the corporate elites and the Austin insiders to account.” He referenced a recent legislative hearing in which a Medicaid provider was accused of surveilling lawmakers and journalists, although an investigation by the Attorney General found no violations.

Details of the Allegations

Grace’s account of her relationship with Capriglione began when she was 18 and working as an exotic dancer. She described him as a “very straight-laced businessman” who frequented the club where she worked. Over time, they developed a close relationship, meeting at various locations, including Capriglione’s office and hotels, and once at his home while his family was out of town. Grace claimed that Capriglione indicated his wife was aware of the relationship and even encouraged him to visit the Red Light District in Amsterdam.

In his statement, Capriglione acknowledged a past affair but did not confirm it was with Grace. He emphasized that he has since moved past this phase of his life, crediting his family for their forgiveness and support. He rejected the assertion that he had visited Amsterdam.

Grace also alleged that Capriglione provided her with cash payments and gifts. In one instance, she recounted a peculiar arrangement where he instructed her to find an envelope with money under a rubber mat behind a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant.

As Capriglione transitioned into politics, Grace claimed their relationship deteriorated, particularly due to his political views. She expressed her discontent with his stances during a phone call and noted that after that conversation, Capriglione severed all communication.

While Grace has expressed a desire for Capriglione to reflect on his values, Capriglione has threatened legal action against both Grace and Current Revolt for what he perceives as defamatory statements.

The unfolding of this situation raises significant questions regarding the integrity of public officials and their adherence to the values they promote. As the Texas Legislature continues its session, the ramifications of these allegations are likely to resonate through the political landscape in the coming weeks.
