UPDATE: A sudden outbreak of a mystery illness has struck the Royal Caribbean cruise ship, The Navigator of the Seas, affecting over 140 people on board. Passengers and crew members reported symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea during the ship’s round-trip journey to Mexico, raising urgent health concerns.
The ship departed from Los Angeles on July 4 and docked in Puerto Vallarta on July 8. It returned to Los Angeles on July 11, with a total of 134 passengers and 7 crew members reporting illness. Authorities are investigating the outbreak, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) still working to identify the cause.
Health experts suggest that the symptoms align with those of norovirus, a highly contagious virus often referred to as the stomach flu. This virus, which can also include symptoms like fever, headache, and body aches, typically resolves within one to three days. However, health officials warn that individuals can still spread the virus even after symptoms have subsided.
A Royal Caribbean spokesperson emphasized that the health and safety of passengers and crew are the company’s top priorities. Travelers who exhibited symptoms were isolated, and the ship underwent thorough cleaning procedures to mitigate further spread. Yet, this outbreak follows a similar incident in September 2022, when 180 passengers fell ill on the Radiance of the Seas during a trip to Alaska.
The Navigator of the Seas, which boasts a capacity of 3,300 passengers, features numerous amenities, including a rock climbing wall, an ice skating rink, and a surf simulator. The $650 million vessel spans 1,020 feet in length and can reach speeds of 25 mph.
As the situation unfolds, the CDC continues to monitor the health of those affected. Passengers and crew are advised to remain vigilant for any symptoms and follow health guidelines. The next steps will involve ongoing assessments and potential recommendations as more information becomes available.
Stay tuned for updates on this rapidly evolving situation as health officials work to ensure the safety of all involved.
