UPDATE: Joshua Jackson has expressed doubts about the future of his series Doctor Odyssey, revealing he is “not holding [his] breath” for a second season. This statement comes as uncertainty looms over the show’s renewal status, despite ongoing discussions between ABC and 20th Television, where co-creator Ryan Murphy is based.

Speaking to People, Jackson, who played a cruise-ship doctor in the series, indicated that the chances of a comeback are slim. “It’s a bummer we don’t get to do it again, but I’m happy for the time that we got,” he said. Jackson candidly noted his lack of insight into the network’s decision-making process, stating, “This is a crazy and difficult business.”

As The Hollywood Reporter highlighted last month, Jackson’s contract has officially “lapsed,” which means the show could potentially continue with a different lead. He praised Murphy and his fellow cast members, expressing disappointment over the potential cancellation. “That was a really good group of people, and it was a really fun show,” Jackson stated.

Reports indicate that Doctor Odyssey will not return for the 2025-26 season, and potentially may be canceled altogether. Although ABC has not made an official announcement regarding the show’s fate, sources confirm that production sets have been dismantled and contract options for the cast are expiring.

In May, Craig Erwich, president of the Disney Television Group, mentioned that creative discussions with Murphy are ongoing, emphasizing the need to explore “what the next chapter looks like.” However, industry insiders suggest that the heavy workload of Murphy, who is involved in multiple projects across ABC, FX, and Hulu, contributes to the uncertainty surrounding Doctor Odyssey.

The show, which also starred Phillipa Soo, Sean Teale, and Don Johnson, received positive ratings, particularly following a crossover episode with 911. The first season featured guest appearances from celebrities like Shania Twain and John Stamos, enhancing its appeal.

As fans await official news, Jackson’s comments underscore the emotional impact of the potential cancellation on the cast and crew. “I hope they got the same thing that we got out of it, which was that it was a beautiful, over-the-top kind of experience that was like nothing else on television,” he reflected.

With the future of Doctor Odyssey hanging in the balance, viewers are left to wonder if and when they might see the show return. For now, Jackson’s sentiments resonate with many fans, who are left hoping for a miracle as discussions continue behind the scenes.
