Florida’s Executive Director for the Division of Emergency Management, Kevin Guthrie, criticized Democratic lawmakers for allegedly misrepresenting conditions at a new detention facility dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz.” During a recent tour attended by over 60 legislators, Guthrie asserted that some representatives were attempting to manufacture controversy for political gain.

Guthrie appeared on Fox News’ “Jesse Watters Primetime” on March 11, 2024, to discuss the weekend tour. He described the experience as “very taxing,” noting that some legislators engaged in what he termed theatrics regarding fabricated issues. When asked if any legislators were trying to “create controversy,” Guthrie responded, “Absolutely.”

One incident that stood out to Guthrie involved a lawmaker using an infrared thermometer to measure temperature, pointing it at a light bulb instead of the ambient air. “I said, ‘Let’s actually pull that down to where the ambient air is at, and not point it at the light bulb,’” he remarked.

Concerns were also raised regarding the facility’s toilet setup. Guthrie defended the system, stating it met or exceeded both national and Florida state standards. “This is a standard lock-up toilet system that is in any secured facility,” he explained, adding that the design included both a sink and toilet for practical use.

Another point of contention arose when Democratic Representative Debbie Wasserman-Schultz criticized the food provided at the facility. Guthrie referenced her comment about a “gray turkey sandwich,” which she claimed was unappealing. He countered that the sandwich was wrapped and not visible to her at the time, questioning how she could make such a judgment. “Think about it like this… individuals that go to a hospital, individuals who go and get Michelle Obama’s lunches, are getting the exact same thing,” Guthrie stated.

The tour and subsequent comments reflect deeper political divides regarding immigration enforcement. Guthrie emphasized that breaking federal immigration law and committing violent crimes should not lead to leniency in treatment. “If you break federal immigration law… you shouldn’t expect to be sent to a resort with a debit card in hand,” he asserted.

This incident underscores ongoing tensions between political parties over immigration policies and enforcement. Guthrie’s remarks highlight a commitment to maintaining security protocols while navigating the complexities of public perception and political discourse.
