Major League Baseball (MLB) has announced a significant change for the upcoming 2025 All-Star Game, set to take place at Truist Park in Atlanta. For the first time since 2019, players will wear their respective team uniforms during the Midsummer Classic, marking a return to tradition that many fans will welcome. This decision reverses a six-year trend where players donned special All-Star jerseys, a departure from the classic aesthetics that have defined the event for decades.

The announcement, made in September 2024, reflects a desire to celebrate players’ connections to their “hometown” teams during the game. Previously, from 2021 to 2024, the All-Star Game featured specially designed jerseys that deviated from the traditional uniforms worn for nearly 90 years. During the 2025 game, National League players will wear their home whites, while American League players will sport their road uniforms, complemented by special caps that match their attire.

All-Star Weekend Fashion Choices

Although the game itself will showcase the teams’ traditional uniforms, the special All-Star jerseys will still be featured prominently during the events leading up to the game. Players will wear these unique uniforms during All-Star Workout Day and the Home Run Derby. The design of these jerseys draws inspiration from the historic uniforms of the Braves, including their retro typeface and styling elements relevant to Truist Park.

This year’s Home Run Derby, scheduled for July 14, 2025, will see participants don jerseys honoring baseball legends. All National League participants will wear the number 44, paying tribute to the iconic Braves player Hank Aaron. Meanwhile, American League participants will wear 3, a nod to Babe Ruth, who famously played with the New York Yankees but wrapped up his career with the Boston Braves. This choice of numbers holds historical significance, reflecting Ruth’s career total of 714 home runs and Aaron’s total of 715 achieved at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.

The initiative to honor these baseball greats was proposed by CC Sabathia, a Hall of Fame pitcher who now serves as a special assistant to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred.

A Brief History of Uniform Changes

The last occasion when MLB players wore their primary uniforms during the All-Star Game was in 2019. From 1930 to 2019, players consistently showcased their team colors during the All-Star festivities. The shift to special All-Star jerseys began in 2021 and continued until 2024, with no All-Star Game held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fans can look forward to the 2025 Midsummer Classic as it promises to blend traditional elements with contemporary celebrations. The return to team uniforms not only enhances the connection between players and their fans but also revives a cherished aspect of baseball history. As excitement builds for the event, the combination of classic uniforms and special jerseys highlights the spirit of baseball and its enduring legacy.
