The Potosi Lady Trojans triumphed over the St. Pius Lancers with a thrilling 51-49 overtime victory to secure the Class 4, District 2 girls basketball championship on March 2, 2024, in Park Hills. This win marks Potosi’s first district title since 2017 and ends a nine-year absence from state playoff competition.

Clutch Performances Lead to Victory

Potosi’s success was driven by standout performances from the Brown sisters. Sophomore Sabyn Brown delivered crucial 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and overtime, while her older sister, Sabra Brown, sealed the game with two free throws after being fouled on a putback attempt with just 3.2 seconds remaining. “I always try to get to the back side and see if I can get a ball. You never know,” said Sabra, who led the team with 21 points for the second consecutive game.

The match was intensely competitive, with neither team leading by more than two possessions. St. Pius held a narrow advantage of 44-39 with under three minutes left in regulation. However, Potosi rallied back with back-to-back clutch shots, including a significant three-pointer from the left corner by Eden Robart, which was pivotal in tying the game.

Strategic Adjustments and Key Contributions

Josh Mapes, the head coach for Potosi, emphasized the importance of defensive strategy and rebounding throughout the game. He noted, “I told the girls that we have been in this situation last year, and not to be nervous. I knew that if we defended and rebounded, then we would have a chance to win.” The Lady Trojans executed this plan effectively, limiting St. Pius’s star player, Brooke Blankenship, to 19 points despite her double-double performance.

The game featured significant contributions from multiple players. Brenley Thornton added seven points for Potosi, while Chloe Rowe’s playmaking ability was evident as she dished out four assists. Potosi capitalized on their free throw opportunities, converting 13 of 21 attempts, compared to St. Pius’s 4 of 8.

Potosi’s resilience shone through in overtime as they took a 49-47 lead with another three-pointer from Sabyn Brown. St. Pius responded with a driving layup from Karli Reynolds, tying the game once again. However, Potosi maintained composure in the closing moments, ultimately securing their victory.

This championship win is particularly significant as it was achieved without any seniors on the roster. “I’m so very proud of us for stepping up with no seniors. We came out here ready to play and handled adversity,” said Sabra Brown, reflecting on the team’s journey.

Potosi will now advance to face the reigning state champion, Doniphan, in the sectional round scheduled for March 4, 2024, at Jackson High School. This victory not only marks a pivotal moment for the team but also showcases the hard work and determination they have displayed throughout the season.
