The BYU Cougars men’s basketball program has gained a significant addition with the commitment of five-star forward Bruce Branch III. Branch announced his decision on October 31, 2023, during a live appearance on ESPN’s “NBA Today.” This announcement marks an important milestone for Coach Kevin Young and the Cougars, as Branch is ranked as the No. 6 recruit in the nation according to 247 Sports.

With a remarkable composite score of 0.9974, Branch becomes the second-highest-rated recruit in BYU’s history, following AJ Dybantsa. His decision to join BYU comes as a surprise to many, as he turned down offers from prestigious programs including USC, Arizona, and Kansas.

Branch is characterized as a versatile player, noted for his length and skill set that is evolving towards guard capabilities. Analyst Adam Finkelstein from 247 Sports highlighted Branch’s shooting ability, which is described as “legitimate and still ascending.” While Branch may not yet be a dynamic creator, his ball-handling skills are promising. He exhibits a smooth style, adeptly maneuvering with the ball while maintaining awareness of his surroundings.

His physical attributes further enhance his potential. Standing at 6-foot-7 with a 7-foot-1 wingspan, Branch possesses an impressive natural frame that is still developing. This combination of height and length offers significant advantages on both ends of the court. Finkelstein points out that Branch’s ability to move without the ball, along with his willingness to exploit mismatches against smaller defenders, showcases his advanced footwork.

Currently hailing from Gilbert, Arizona, Branch plays for California’s Prolific Prep, a school known for its strong basketball program. He joins fellow recruits Dean Rueckert and Will Openshaw, both from Timpview High in Provo, as part of BYU’s current recruitment cycle.

The addition of Bruce Branch III is expected to elevate BYU’s competitiveness in the upcoming seasons, as the Cougars aim to build a strong roster under Coach Young’s direction. His commitment not only reflects Branch’s personal goals but also enhances BYU’s stature in the college basketball landscape.
