The candidate qualifying period for the 2026 election cycle began on March 2, 2026, and will continue until March 6, 2026. This critical process allows major party candidates to secure their places on the primary ballot scheduled for May 19, 2026. Meanwhile, independent and political-body candidates will qualify for the general election, set for November 3, 2026.

Across Georgia, several local offices will be contested, including positions for the Whitfield County Commissioners and members of the Whitfield County Board of Education. The state offices up for election include Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and various other positions such as the Georgia Secretary of State and Attorney General. Every seat in the Georgia State Senate and the Georgia House of Representatives will also be on the ballot, providing voters with a full slate of candidates.

Understanding the Qualifying Process

“Qualifying” refers to the official procedure through which candidates submit their paperwork and fees to appear on the ballot. Throughout Georgia, candidates can file from 9 a.m. on March 2 through noon on March 6. For candidates from the Democratic and Republican parties, this process is essential for participation in the May primary elections. Independent candidates, including those from political bodies like the Libertarian Party, will instead aim for the November general election ballot following additional nomination requirements.

In Whitfield County, qualifying will take place at the Whitfield County Courthouse, located at 205 N. Selvidge St., Dalton. The Democratic Party qualifying will happen in the lower-level common area, while the Republican Party will conduct its qualifying at the Board of Elections Office in the same building. Interested candidates should contact Shaynee Bryson, the Election Supervisor, via email at [email protected] to arrange a time for paperwork pickup.

Qualifying Fees and Local Races

Candidates for local offices in Whitfield County need to pay specific qualifying fees. For example, the fee for the Whitfield County Commissioner positions (Districts 1 and 3) is $270. Candidates for the Board of Education will face a significantly lower fee of $18.

At the state and federal levels, qualifying will occur at the State Capitol in Atlanta. Fees vary by position, with candidates for U.S. Senate or U.S. House of Representatives required to pay $5,220. The fee for running for Governor is set at $5,549.78, while the Attorney General’s position carries a fee of $4,475.07.

As the qualifying window progresses, the political landscape of Georgia prepares for a dynamic election cycle. The upcoming races promise to engage voters and shape the future of local and state governance.
