UPDATE: Six standout athletes from the Orlando area have emerged from the largest Under Armour Combine in the nation, held at Bishop Moore Catholic High School on Saturday. Out of nearly 800 players, these local talents secured coveted invites to Sunday’s exclusive Camp Series event.
Defensive lineman Mattheus Kaminski Cordeiro of West Orange and linebackers Jelani Bentley of Tavares, Troy Turner of Lake Mary, defensive backs Garrison Lubin of Lake Minneola and Malcolm Jones of Ocoee, along with offensive lineman Fenway Cochrane of East Ridge, all earned MVP honors, marking a breakthrough moment for these aspiring college recruits.
The recognition is bittersweet for Jelani Bentley, whose twin brother Ari Bentley did not receive an invite despite similar talent. “I just want to give all the glory to God,” said Jelani, ranked No. 10 in the Central Florida Super60. “It’s kind of weird because I’m surprised he was not up here with me.” Both brothers aim to play together in college, underscoring the emotional stakes involved in their journey.
Kaminski Cordeiro, a rising junior, expressed his determination to keep improving. “It feels amazing. I got to prove myself, and now tomorrow I’m gonna come out here and prove myself again,” he stated. At 6-foot-3 and 212 pounds, he was a defensive powerhouse for West Orange last season, registering nine sacks.
Cochrane, another standout, is no stranger to accolades, having recently been named MVP at the All-American Exposure Camp. “I just want to prove that I dominate, that I’m the best at what I do,” he declared. His focus on hard work is evident, as he dedicates hours daily to his training.
Turner, coming off a state championship with Lake Mary, also celebrated his MVP honor. “It’s a blessing. God leads the way,” he said, reflecting on his growth and aspirations for the upcoming season.
Lubin, who played only five games last season, is eager to showcase his skills. “This means I have been chosen to be the best to go against the best,” he shared, emphasizing the importance of competition in his development.
Jones, who recently transferred from Apopka to Ocoee, described his feelings of excitement and gratitude. “I’ve been dreaming about this since I was a little kid,” he said. His transfer has already paid off, catching the attention of UA coaches with his impressive performance.
Despite the spotlight on these six, other athletes also shone at the combine. Onix Vazquez from Windermere recorded the best 40-yard dash time of 4.45 seconds, showcasing his speed and consistency. “I’m not really disappointed because I know what I did,” he explained, remaining confident as he transitions to playing running back this season.
With strong performances across the board, these athletes are not just competing for recognition; they are laying the groundwork for their futures. The stakes are high and the competition fierce as they aim to attract college recruiters.
As the excitement continues into Sunday’s camp, all eyes will be on these Orlando stars to see how they capitalize on their opportunities. The journey is just beginning, and the world of college football awaits.
