LeRoy Forehand, a distinguished World War II veteran and long-time resident of Torrance, California, passed away peacefully from natural causes on February 7, 2026, at the age of 101. His life was marked by service, both in the military and his local community, where he made a lasting impact.
Born in Grinnell, Iowa, LeRoy moved to southern California in 1941, where he began his career at Lockheed Aircraft as an aircraft ordnance technician. There, he worked on the P-38 fighters before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in August 1942. His military service took him to the Pacific theater, where he notably served as a Beach Master during the Battle of Saipan in 1945, a pivotal moment in the war.
A Life of Community Engagement
After the war, LeRoy returned to southern California, continuing his professional life at TRW and later at CALTRANS, where he worked until his retirement. His commitment to community service was evident through his involvement with the Gardena Masonic Lodge, which he joined in 1960, eventually attaining the office of Master.
LeRoy’s dedication to his fellow veterans was reflected in his active membership with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). For over 20 years, he served on the Honor Guard at VFW Post 1622 in Lomita, honoring those who served alongside him. He was also a passionate supporter of the USS Iowa and regularly participated in the annual Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade, demonstrating his pride in his service and his country.
Memorial Services and Legacy
LeRoy is survived by his daughter, Ruth Ann Forehand, who along with the community, will remember him for his contributions and vibrant spirit. A viewing will take place at Halverson, Stone and Myers Mortuary located at 1223 Cravens Ave., Torrance, on Thursday, February 26, from 16:00 to 19:00. Following this, a memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, February 28, at 10:00 within the mortuary chapel.
LeRoy will be laid to rest at Green Hills Cemetery after the memorial service. A celebration of his life will follow at Lomita VFW Post 1622, located at 1865 Lomita Blvd., allowing friends and family to honor his legacy together.
