A new gaming accessory is blending nostalgia with modern technology: the GameCube dock for the Nintendo Switch. Developer Dorison Hugo has spent seven years refining this project, which aims to integrate the classic GameCube controller with the contemporary Switch console. The updated docks bring several features, including the ability to play directly on the Switch’s screen and a mechanical lock designed to prevent theft.

In a notable modification, Hugo discovered that the interior of a standard Switch dock offers sufficient space to incorporate four GameCube ports. The challenge was selecting the right commercial adapter to facilitate this integration. The Wii U branded adapter previously used was not suitable; instead, a compact third-party adapter from Input Integrity proved effective.

To make the ports fit, Hugo had to remove them from their original board. This required careful cable management, which was simplified by using connectors designed for the GameCube. Additionally, precise cuts were necessary to create neat openings in the front of the dock, with modifications secured using superglue, epoxy, and hot glue.

Innovations in the Switch 2 Dock

With the recent release of the Switch 2, Hugo adapted the dock design to accommodate this new model. Although the newer version provides more internal space, fitting the ports still required modification. By shaving a few millimeters off the top of the ports, they could fit within the case, though this made achieving a professional appearance more difficult.

Another challenge arose with connecting the adapter’s USB cable to the dock’s printed circuit board (PCB). To address this, an additional USB cable was needed, adding complexity to the setup. Despite these hurdles, both modified docks exhibit a high standard of craftsmanship, achieving near-original equipment manufacturer (OEM) quality.

Hugo’s innovative approach demonstrates how retro gaming can thrive alongside modern technology, offering enthusiasts a unique blend of nostalgia and functionality. As the gaming landscape evolves, such projects highlight the enduring appeal of classic consoles and controllers, ensuring that their legacy continues in the present day.
