A growing number of runners are preparing to tackle a challenging 62-mile course connecting all five Murphy’s grocery stores in Humboldt County on March 14, 2024. Organized by local ultrarunner Pete Ciotti, this unique event serves both as a footrace and a fundraising initiative for businesses and residents impacted by a fire that occurred on January 2.

Participants will begin their journey at the Murphy’s in Trinidad, traversing scenic routes including Scenic Drive, Clam Beach, and the Hammond Coast Trail, before stopping at the Arcata Westwood location. Runners will then continue to Glendale, back to Arcata, and follow the Bay Trail to Cutten, finally returning to the Sunny Brae location for a total of 62 miles. This event, termed the Murphy’s 100k, is a nod to the cycling events of the past, with a distinct focus on running.

Ciotti, who previously organized similar endurance events, is enthusiastic about the opportunity to support the local community. He has opted not to charge a registration fee for participants but encourages donations to assist those affected by the recent fire through the Arcata Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, Murphy’s plans to contribute by allowing customers to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar during the week leading up to the race, with all proceeds directed to the Chamber.

In his discussions with the Outpost, Ciotti expressed his motivation for this initiative, stating, “Murphy’s is a good local business worth supporting.” He aims to promote running while also helping those in need, balancing his desire to run a 100k with his commitment to organizing local events.

To ensure the runners have adequate support, employees at Murphy’s will set up aid stations at each store along the route. Since the announcement of the event, around 15 participants have signed up, with some forming a relay team to complete the distance collaboratively.

Despite the daunting nature of running 62 miles in one day, Ciotti remains optimistic about the event’s potential for community engagement. He noted, “It’s a great way to get everyone moving and see all the cool spots around the area,” highlighting the scenic beauty of locations such as the Bay Trail and Clam Beach.

Ciotti encourages local residents to explore running through community clubs, stating, “In these dark times, it’s good to have people like that who are doing positive things.” This initiative not only promises to foster a sense of camaraderie among participants but also aims to raise funds for those in need.
