urgent-call-for-artists-mural-at-elyria-city-hall-announced

UPDATE: The Elyria Community Partnership has just launched an urgent call for artists to create a stunning mural on the Elyria City Hall, aiming to reflect the city’s rich history and vibrant future. This significant project is expected to capture the essence of Elyria while enhancing the community’s visual landscape.

The mural will be prominently displayed on a wall facing Ely Square, with an emphasis on telling the story of Elyria’s past and its aspirations moving forward. “We’re really looking for an artist who can respect Elyria’s past while also helping us tell a story about where we’re headed,” stated Monet Roberts-Walton, Executive Director of Elyria Community Partnership.

This initiative is not only a chance for local and national artists to showcase their talents but also serves as a critical opportunity for community engagement. The selected artist will collaborate closely with city officials, stakeholders, and community members, including youth voices, to ensure the mural authentically represents Elyria.

“This is a highly collaborative process,” Roberts-Walton continued. “We want the artist to engage with our community members, hear their perspectives, and bring those ideas together in a way that feels authentic to Elyria.”

Artists are encouraged to apply before the February 10, 2024 deadline. The application process requires submissions to be sent as a single PDF file no larger than 15MB to [email protected] with the subject line “Elyria City Hall Mural.”

Stakeholders have identified several themes for inspiration, including cultural heritage, nature, and abstract styles. The project aligns with the Elyria Community Partnership’s mission to enhance the quality of life and boost downtown vibrancy, a goal highlighted in their 2023 vibrancy action plan, which was shaped by extensive community input.

The mural is set to be completed later this year, potentially coinciding with America’s 250th anniversary celebrations and Elyria’s summer programming, pending the city’s review process.

“Art creates a sense of value and pride,” Roberts-Walton emphasized. “It shows residents and investors that this is a place that cares about itself and is worth investing in.”

This announcement marks a pivotal moment for Elyria, as it seeks to blend past and future through public art, inviting both residents and visitors to engage with the community in a visually impactful way.
