URGENT UPDATE: Local basketball talent showcased their skills at the annual Hoop Shoot free throw contest held at Hall Gym on January 11, 2025. With 22 contestants aged 8 to 13, this year’s event, organized by the Salisbury Elks Lodge #699 and Salisbury Parks and Recreation, drew significant community support.
Debbie Martin, publicity chair for the Salisbury Elks Lodge, expressed excitement over the turnout, stating, “The local talent did not disappoint the family and friends that were there for support and encouragement.” Contestants faced off in a high-pressure environment, shooting a total of 25 free throws—10 in the first round and 15 in the final round.
The competition saw fierce action, with the top performers now advancing to the district competition in High Point on January 24. The winners are as follows:
– **Boys 8-9**: 1st – Bryson Donis, 2nd – Casen Doby
– **Boys 10-11**: 1st – Graham Davis, 2nd – Blake Adams
– **Boys 12-13**: 1st – Jaxon Harris, 2nd – Frank Adams
– **Girls 8-9**: 1st – Amyiah Terzi, 2nd – Jordyn Jones
– **Girls 10-11**: 1st – Keianna Holiday, 2nd – Merritt Menees
– **Girls 12-13**: 1st – Adalynn Kendall
Jim Oliver, the Hoop Shoot coordinator, praised the participants, stating, “The event was great, the competition fierce, and the kids did well under pressure.”
A special highlight of the day was a tribute to Marile Steele, a 2025 National Hoop Shoot Finalist representing the Salisbury Elks Lodge in Chicago this April. She received a shadow box filled with memorabilia from her journey, presented by Kenny Martin, past exalted ruler and hoop shoot coordinator. “We are so very proud of Marile,” said Martin. “She represented the Salisbury Elks well.”
The excitement continues as district winners will proceed to state and then regional competitions, with the National Hoop Shoot Finals scheduled for April 16-19, 2025, in Chicago, Illinois.
