caltech-research-building-faces-opposition-at-design-commission

The **Pasadena Design Commission** is set to evaluate a controversial four-story research building proposed by the **California Institute of Technology (Caltech)** during a meeting scheduled for **January 27, 2024**. The project, which aims to create a **93,539 square foot** facility at **1364 E. Green St.**, has drawn significant backlash from local residents and adjacent communities, particularly the **St. Philip the Apostle Church** and school.

Last month, the commission chose to postpone the approval of the project, allowing more time for community input. City officials have recommended the design for approval, contingent upon compliance with a list of **55 proposed conditions** addressing design, public works, and environmental impact. Among the notable elements of the project is the planned removal of two protected trees, a **California fan palm** and an **incense cedar**, which has raised further concerns among community members.

The proposed building, referred to as the **innovation center**, is intended to support Caltech’s expanding startup ecosystem by offering dedicated research and development office space, along with laboratory facilities. According to information provided by Caltech, the design aims to minimize potential negative impacts on traffic, air quality, and noise, while enhancing job opportunities and economic benefits for the surrounding area.

In the December meeting, representatives from the church and school voiced strong objections, citing worries about increased traffic, security issues, and the size of the new building. An online petition opposing the project has gained substantial traction, with more than **1,300 signatures** collected as of January 22, 2024. In addition, the city has received over a dozen written comments from residents expressing their concerns about the development.

In a letter dated **January 23, 2024**, Pastor **Tony Gomez** noted that a group of parishioners with planning and development expertise conducted an in-depth review of the proposal. Their findings led to a shift in the parish’s stance, as Gomez stated, “It became clear that the parish can no longer support the project as it is currently proposed.” He urged community members to attend the upcoming meeting to voice their opinions.

The **Pasadena Design Commission** meeting is scheduled for **6:30 PM** at the **Pasadena Convention Center**, located at **300 E. Green St.** This gathering presents a critical opportunity for local residents to engage with officials regarding the proposed research facility that could significantly alter the neighborhood landscape.
