A new chapter for local readers begins as a brand new independent bookstore, The Scribbled Hollow, opens in historic downtown Glendale, Arizona. The store is set to welcome customers on July 11, 2023, with an exciting weekend of book signings, author meet-and-greets, and cosplay activities.
The owner, Amber Murray, shared her enthusiasm for the new venture, which marks a significant milestone in her long-standing dream of owning a physical bookstore. “It’s always been a dream of mine to own a brick-and-mortar bookstore,” Murray stated. The Scribbled Hollow has evolved from its humble beginnings as a pop-up shop at comic cons and festivals, where Murray initially sold children’s books and expanded to include merchandise and gifts.
Transitioning from a temporary shop at conventions to a permanent location has proven to be “dramatically different,” according to Murray. She reflected on the challenges of setting up at events, saying, “I thought, ‘Oh, this will be old hat, I’ve been in business 13 years, this will be nothing.’ This has been dramatically different.” The new store allows her to leave her creations on display rather than dismantling them after each event.
Having a dedicated space also means that The Scribbled Hollow can offer a wider selection of products. Murray emphasized the advantage of keeping stock on the shelves, contrasting it with the limitations of convention sales. “Readers may have to wait until the next convention if they wait too long to buy their favorite merch,” she explained. Now, customers can rely on a consistent inventory.
Community Engagement and Events
The Scribbled Hollow is described by Murray as a “little shop of fantasy,” catering to fans of science fiction and various fandoms. This specialization reflects her personal passion for fantasy literature and the activities that accompany it, such as readings and signings. “Having the brick-and-mortar store like this will allow us to be more of a community-driven store,” she noted.
With a physical space, Murray can finally host events she envisioned during her time at conventions. “At a con, I can’t have a book reading, I can’t have a poetry slam, I can’t have an author signing,” she remarked. “But here I can.” The grand opening weekend will feature numerous activities, including an open mic poetry slam, aligning with her vision to create a vibrant community hub.
The Scribbled Hollow will stand out as the only independently owned brick-and-mortar bookstore in the West Valley. While there are various book mobiles, pop-up shops, and used bookstores in the area, Murray’s venture will fill a unique niche. “Everybody is super excited about there being a West Valley bookstore,” she said, noting the enthusiasm surrounding the opening.
Despite the official opening on July 11, the store has already hosted a few soft opening days, where Murray has seen many repeat customers. “People who walk around the neighborhood or are from right in here are already popping in to say hi and see what else I already have new,” she shared.
Murray expressed deep gratitude toward the community for their support. “Our sponsors actually paid our first and last months’ rent,” she revealed, her voice filled with emotion. “They made it happen. We didn’t even find that money; they came through for us.” The backing from the community has been invaluable to her, and she hopes to give back by promoting reading and creativity.
“I really want to inspire people to read more,” she stated. She envisions The Scribbled Hollow as a place that not only sells books but also fosters a love for literature and creativity.
