Donna Zera-Hulicki, a dedicated registered nurse and cherished community member, passed away on January 13, 2026, at the age of 76. She succumbed to metastatic cancer after a long and courageous battle. Known for her gentle spirit and unwavering commitment to her patients, Donna left an indelible mark on the lives she touched throughout her nursing career and personal life.

Born in Hartford, Donna was the daughter of the late Alphonse and Catherine (Tomasini) Zera. Facing financial challenges in her youth, she began working at an early age to support herself. Her determination led her to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN) and later achieve her registered nurse (RN) designation. She dedicated many years of her life to St. Francis Hospital, primarily working night shifts as a pediatric nurse.

Career in Pediatric Nursing

After obtaining her RN license, Donna specialized in pediatric nursing in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) at CT Children’s Hospital in Hartford. Her unique ability to connect with children—often without needing words—set her apart as a caregiver. She advocated fiercely for her young patients, ensuring they received the compassion and care they needed.

Donna’s approach to nursing was characterized by her blend of artistry and practicality. She enjoyed physical outdoor activities, whether hiking, walking her beloved dog Lily-Blue, or simply appreciating nature’s beauty. An artist at heart, she expressed her creativity through various mediums, including watercolor and stone etching, while also being skilled in home improvement tasks like tiling and gutter maintenance.

Legacy of Kindness and Community Impact

Donna is survived by her close-knit group of nursing friends and caregivers, including Emilia Mascaro, Pauline Panatieri, Marilyn Plumridge, Nathalie Mascolo, Theresa DeSocio, Lisa Venora-Abbott, and Gloria Zaleski. She was predeceased by her loving partner, Frances Hulicki, and her brothers, SSG Fred Zera and Alfred Zera.

Her family and friends express deep gratitude to the medical professionals at the Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center for their unwavering care and support since 2007. Special thanks go to Dr. Timothy Hong, her hematologist oncologist, Tiffany, her nurse, and Dr. Lindsay Bliss, her oncology surgeon, for their dedication during her treatment.

A private service will be held at Donna’s request, with a celebration of her life planned for later this year. In her memory, family and friends encourage acts of kindness towards others or contributions to animal welfare. To leave condolences, visit www.carmonfuneralhome.com.
