Kat Abughazaleh, a progressive candidate for the open seat in Illinois’ 9th congressional district, has publicly apologized for missing a key candidate forum due to her narcolepsy. The 26-year-old former influencer, who previously worked for Media Matters for America, detailed her condition in an Instagram post explaining her absence.
Candidate’s Health Condition Affects Campaign
In her statement, Abughazaleh described how she “ended up sleeping through alarms, calls, and even my campaign manager knocking on my door repeatedly.” She emphasized the challenges of managing narcolepsy, a chronic illness that can lead to extreme fatigue and sudden sleep attacks.
“Earlier this evening, I was scheduled to attend a forum with members,” she wrote, addressing those who attended the event. “And then I didn’t show up.” Abughazaleh expressed her “sincerest apologies” and provided context for her absence, stating that her condition makes it difficult to remain awake during certain times.
The forum was organized by a chapter of Indivisible, a left-leaning activist group backed by the Soros family. Abughazaleh has been a vocal advocate for various progressive causes, including immigration reform, which is reflected in her campaign platform.
Political Challenges and Future Prospects
Abughazaleh is running in a crowded primary to replace incumbent Democratic Representative Jan Schakowsky, who announced in January 2025 that she would not seek re-election. Her campaign focuses on “anti-authoritarianism,” asserting her commitment to fighting against what she describes as oppressive actions by agencies like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In October 2025, Abughazaleh faced legal challenges when a federal grand jury indicted her for allegedly hindering ICE officers during a lawful enforcement operation. This incident, which included an attempt to impede an ICE agent’s vehicle, was captured in a video that circulated on social media.
Abughazaleh’s campaign has not responded to requests for comment regarding her recent absence at the forum. Despite the challenges she faces, her candidacy remains a focal point in the upcoming election, as she seeks to galvanize support from constituents who resonate with her progressive ideals.
