The Washington County Fair has appointed a new manager, bringing extensive experience from the entertainment industry. Paul Hendrickson, a seasoned production manager with over 40 years in the field, will oversee operations at the fair, which typically takes place in late July to early August in Baytown Township.

Hendrickson, 71, hails from Norwalk, Iowa, and has previously held significant roles at TMS in Omaha and Insane Impact in Des Moines. He also served as operations manager at Reliant Park in Houston. “I’m bringing a lot of experience and industry contacts, which obviously will be very helpful,” Hendrickson stated, expressing enthusiasm for his new role.

His unique qualifications include experience at various state and county fairs, including those in California and Washington. As a member of the International Association of Fairs and Expos, Hendrickson appreciates the operations of the Washington County Fair. “It operates well,” he remarked. “It’s a mini version of the Minnesota State Fair. It’s just easier to get around and obviously closer to parking. Can it grow? Absolutely. They have a lot of open land where the Fair can expand and become bigger, that’s for sure.”

The hiring decision followed a thorough selection process. Hendrickson was one of three candidates who applied for the part-time position. The search committee of the Washington County Agricultural Society unanimously recommended him to the executive board. Margot Rheinberger, a board member and part of the search committee, expressed confidence in the choice, stating, “We hit the jackpot.”

Hendrickson’s family ties to the organization were also noted; he is the father of Beth Thurmes and father-in-law of Ben Thurmes, a member of the executive board. To maintain impartiality, Ben Thurmes abstained from voting on the hiring decision.

The previous manager, Dorie Ostertag, resigned from both her managerial and treasurer roles on October 21, 2023, during the annual meeting of the Washington County Agricultural Society.

As the Washington County Fair prepares for its next chapter under Hendrickson’s leadership, the community looks forward to new developments and potential growth opportunities at this beloved annual event.
