The Central Invitational wrestling tournament, held on March 15, 2024, in Park Hills, witnessed impressive performances from both the Potosi boys and Ste. Genevieve girls teams. Potosi emerged victorious in the boys’ division, while Ste. Genevieve dominated the girls’ competition, showcasing their depth and skill across multiple weight classes.
Potosi Boys Take Top Honors
Potosi’s boys team triumphed over a competitive field of 17 teams, accumulating a total of 201 points. Junior wrestlers Carter Pyatt and Karsen Boyer were pivotal in this achievement, each securing individual championships in their respective weight classes. Pyatt solidified his status by winning the 165-pound championship with an impressive 18-0 technical fall, marking his third consecutive title at this event.
Boyer, wrestling at 175 pounds, successfully navigated a tense match against Central freshman Lane Warden, scoring a crucial takedown just before the end of the first period. Boyer’s performance, which included a total of three falls, contributed significantly to Potosi’s overall success.
Other notable performances included Gavin Stone at 126 pounds, who also claimed first place, and a strong showing from teammates Blayne Maxwell, Zane Richards, and Nick Brown, all of whom advanced to the finals. North County and Central placed fifth and sixth, respectively, each celebrating two bracket champions.
Ste. Genevieve Girls Capture Title
In the girls’ division, the Ste. Genevieve team showcased remarkable talent, securing a commanding 270.5 points to clinch the tournament title. Seven wrestlers from the Dragons topped their weight classes, with Aila Wolk (115 pounds), Ragan Picou (135 pounds), and Anna Fischer (170 pounds) leading the charge with perfect 4-0 records and four falls each.
The girls’ team from Potosi also made an impact, with Launa Cantrell (170 pounds), Kammara Tedder (115 pounds), and Zowee Gamble (235 pounds) earning runner-up finishes. Cantrell’s journey included three consecutive pins, highlighting her determination and skill on the mat.
Central’s Lillee Petty made a notable entrance, winning the 110-pound title with a decisive 15-0 shutout. Her performance, alongside teammates who also placed well, demonstrated the competitive spirit of the tournament.
The strong showings from both the Potosi boys and Ste. Genevieve girls at the Central Invitational reflect not only their individual talents but also the strength of their respective wrestling programs.
