UPDATE: Major developments are reshaping the North Devon Rail Network as 2025 wraps up, with exciting plans for new trains and station improvements now confirmed. The Friends Of Barnstaple Railway Station (FOBRS) has celebrated a remarkable year, earning three prestigious regional awards, including the South West in Bloom Outstanding award.

In a significant push for modernization, the Northern Devon Railway Development Alliance (NDRDA) has welcomed Lapford Parish Council as its newest member, increasing its coalition of over two dozen organizations advocating for enhancements along the North Devon (Tarka) line. Roger Blake, Railfuture’s national director, highlighted the overwhelming demand, stating, “The line is so popular that it’s usually standing room only, including on weekends. We must find ways to increase capacity.”

Just last week, GWR announced the addition of 68 new carriages to their fleet, enhancing services with updated Coradia Class 175 trains. This expansion is expected to alleviate overcrowding and improve passenger experiences.

The momentum didn’t stop there. In April, FOBRS secured funding from GWR’s Customer and Communities Improvement Fund (CCIF) aimed at environmental enhancements at Barnstaple station. Initiatives include new planters and educational boards that celebrate the station’s rich history, set to roll out in early 2026.

Further developments came in June when Barnstaple Town Council pledged a significant donation to support an economic assessment for extending train services to Bideford. This key initiative is backed by the newly adopted Local Transport Plan for 2025-40, creating a robust framework for future rail enhancements in the region.

In a recent workshop held in September, stakeholders reviewed the feasibility of extending services from Exeter to Bideford, with studies funded by local councils and Railfuture. This initiative aims to ensure that North Devon residents have access to improved rail services, critical for economic growth and connectivity.

November saw North Devon MP Ian Roome launch a petition advocating for better rail services, capturing community support and emphasizing the urgent need for voices to be heard in Westminster. A record-breaking surge in rail usage in December confirmed the growing demand, with evening peak conditions at Exeter Central described as resembling a “mosh pit.”

Looking ahead, 2026 promises the introduction of some of the new GWR trains on the North Devon and Dartmoor lines, marking a pivotal shift in local transportation. The NDRDA will host its third annual convention in March 2026, where further plans for regional rail improvements will be discussed.

This surge in activity and commitment to enhancing the North Devon rail experience is not merely about transportation; it’s about fostering community connections and supporting local economies. As these developments unfold, they hold the potential to transform travel in North Devon for years to come.

Stay tuned for more updates on this evolving story as local councils and transport authorities continue to push for improvements that are crucial for North Devon’s future.
