The Detroit Lakes boys basketball team showcased its strength on January 8, 2024, defeating Rocori 81-61 in a decisive victory. In a performance reminiscent of the famed “Splash Brothers,” senior guards Damarion Moss and Dawson VonRuden combined for 43 points, including 10 three-pointers, propelling their team to a commanding win at Lakeshirts Fieldhouse.
The Lakers had faced Rocori in a closely contested series last season, winning by a narrow margin of five points across two games. This time, however, the narrative changed dramatically as Detroit Lakes established control early. Coach Brett Maass highlighted the impact of his team’s pace and pressure, particularly in the second half when they surged ahead to a 20-point lead. “Our pace and pressure got to them a little bit at the start of that second half,” Maass noted. “I think we went on a little run to go up 18, 19, or 20.”
Throughout the game, Detroit Lakes maintained a relentless offensive strategy. Moss opened the scoring with a three-pointer, marking the beginning of a strong performance that would see him finish the night with a game-high 25 points. The teams traded leads early, with Rocori briefly gaining an advantage at 6-5, but VonRuden quickly responded with a three-pointer to reclaim the lead.
Moss echoed the team’s unity, stating, “We got a great group of guys. Everyone’s buying into what we’re trying to do this year, and that’s what’s led to our success.” The Lakers’ ability to respond to Rocori’s scoring kept the momentum firmly in their favor, as they closed the first half with a 48-37 lead.
The second half started with Rocori’s Connor Pearson cutting the deficit to eight points with a three-pointer, but that was as close as the Spartans would get. Moss quickly answered back with his fourth triple, extending the Lakers’ lead. Detroit Lakes capitalized on their defensive capabilities as well, with Moss recording six steals, further stifling Rocori’s attempts to mount a comeback.
Maass praised Moss’s contributions, saying, “Damarion is a great basketball player. He’s just a great leader as well and pumps the guys up.” As the game progressed, the team demonstrated a seamless synergy that has developed over years of playing together. Moss and VonRuden, who have established a strong bond on and off the court, displayed their chemistry throughout the match, with the duo’s performance being pivotal to the team’s success.
VonRuden finished the game with 18 points, shooting an impressive 6-for-10 from beyond the arc. His quick succession of three-pointers helped ignite the Lakers’ offense and keep Rocori on the back foot. “They are in sync with each other,” Maass remarked, emphasizing their longstanding partnership on the court.
The victory marked Detroit Lakes’ third consecutive win, reinforcing their momentum as they continue through the season. The Lakers are now honing in on their strategy, with Moss stating, “We’re just playing together… Everyone’s trying to get into their spots, knock down shots. We’re playing defense really well, and it’s just all coming together.”
As the season progresses, the Lakers are poised to build on this success, demonstrating both skill and teamwork that could carry them deep into the competition. The final score reflected their dominance: Detroit Lakes 81, Rocori 61.
