long-term-traffic-shift-on-i-95-south-begins-next-week

Drivers using southbound Interstate 95 in Philadelphia should prepare for significant traffic disruptions as overnight lane closures begin next week, marking the start of a long-term traffic shift associated with a crucial bridge repair project. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that from January 13 to January 16, 2024, construction teams will install barriers and implement related work to establish a new traffic pattern between Spruce Street and Packer Avenue.

During this period, a single lane will close nightly from 21:00 to 00:00, followed by a double lane closure from 00:00 to 05:00. PennDOT anticipates significant backups and delays during these overnight operations, which are weather dependent. By 05:00 on January 17, crews are expected to have implemented the new traffic configuration, which will remain in effect until late May.

Details of the Bridge Repair Project

This traffic adjustment is part of a broader $37.4 million federally funded initiative aimed at essential repairs to interstate bridges, ensuring safety, mobility, and structural integrity. Under the scope of work, crews will address deteriorated bridge decks and steel superstructure components, as well as prestressed concrete beams, bridge railings, guiderails, and steel sign supports.

The project will also involve replacing expansion joints and deck seals, along with extensive substructure repairs that include work on bearings, concrete elements, and bridge seats. Additionally, improvements will encompass cleaning and repainting 11 overhead steel sign structures and upgrading roadway lighting to energy-efficient LED luminaires.

IEW Construction Group, Inc., based in Hamilton, New Jersey, has been contracted as the general contractor for this extensive undertaking. With the impending overnight closures leading to a prolonged traffic shift on this heavily traveled stretch of I-95, motorists are encouraged to plan their routes ahead of time and stay updated on changing conditions.
