MIDWEST CITY, Okla. — A spirited young Oklahoman is vying for a prestigious title and a substantial prize in the Ranger Rick Magazine competition, aiming to enhance his community service efforts. Cannon Deeter, a 12-year-old with a passion for the outdoors, has dedicated his summers to mowing lawns, not just as a business, but as a mission to help those who are unable to maintain their yards themselves.
“It’s better to be outside than inside,” Deeter shared, reflecting his love for nature and community service. For the past three summers, Deeter has mowed hundreds of lawns, some for his lawn care business and others free of charge for the disabled, veterans, and the elderly through the Raising Men Lawncare Service.
A Commitment to Community Service
Deeter’s initiative has not gone unnoticed. His dedication to community service has earned him recognition from the Mayor of Midwest City. “Either they can’t do it if they’re old or disabled. Or they don’t have the money or the time,” Deeter explained. His efforts highlight a significant need within the community, and his work has been a vital support for many.
When asked about the time it takes to mow a lawn, Deeter noted, “If [the lawns are] easy, it’ll be like 30-45 minutes, but if they’re like really long, it’s like an hour and a half to an hour.” His commitment to helping others is as strong as his love for the outdoors, where he also enjoys activities like camping, hiking, fishing, and kayaking.
Competing for a Cause
Deeter’s passion for the outdoors and community service has led him to enter the Ranger Rick’s Jr. Ranger Competition. The winner of this competition will not only grace the cover of the magazine but also have the opportunity to meet Animal Planet legend, Jeff Corwin. Voting for the quarter-finals ends on Thursday, July 10th, after which successful candidates will move on to the semi-finals.
The grand prize of $20,000 is not just a personal goal for Deeter; it represents an opportunity to expand his community service. “I’ll get a riding mower so I can help more people with the longer and bigger yards,” Deeter said. “I’m going to buy an enclosed trailer for my lawn care business.”
Impact and Future Aspirations
The potential prize money would allow Deeter to increase his capacity to help others, one lawn at a time. His story is a testament to the positive impact young individuals can have on their communities. The competition and its rewards could significantly enhance his ability to serve, bringing more efficiency and reach to his efforts.
Deeter’s initiative is part of a broader movement encouraging youth involvement in community service. Programs like Raising Men Lawncare Service offer young people the chance to contribute meaningfully to their communities, fostering a sense of responsibility and empathy.
Looking Ahead
As Deeter awaits the results of the competition, his focus remains on his community. His story has inspired many, highlighting the importance of civic engagement and the impact of small acts of kindness. Whether or not he wins the competition, Deeter’s dedication to service continues to grow, with plans to further his efforts in the future.
