Syria’s security forces successfully thwarted a terror plot orchestrated by the Daesh group aimed at civilian gatherings and churches in the northern city of Aleppo during New Year celebrations. The Interior Ministry announced on Thursday that intelligence received indicated plans for suicide attacks across several provinces, with Aleppo identified as a primary target.

The threat was uncovered through extensive counterterrorism operations, which included monitoring Daesh cells and collaborating with international partners. In its statement, the Interior Ministry emphasized that heightened security measures were implemented as a proactive response. These measures included increased protection around churches, the deployment of both fixed and mobile patrols, and the establishment of checkpoints throughout the city.

On the evening of December 27, 2024, at a checkpoint in the Bab al-Faraj area of Aleppo, officers became suspicious of a man later identified as a Daesh member. When authorities attempted to verify his identity, the suspect opened fire, resulting in the death of a police officer and injuring two others before detonating an explosive device. The ministry highlighted that the decisive actions of its personnel were instrumental in preventing a significant terrorist attack targeting civilians during the New Year festivities.

The announcement of this thwarted attack comes shortly after Syria formally joined the US-led international coalition against Daesh on November 12, 2024. This coalition, established in 2014, has conducted military operations against the terror group in both Syria and Iraq, although Syria had not previously been a member. The current Syrian administration is focused on tightening security conditions nationwide, particularly following the fall of the Assad regime in late 2024.

The Interior Ministry’s proactive approach underscores the ongoing threat posed by Daesh and the importance of vigilance in ensuring the safety of civilians during major public celebrations. As the New Year approaches, authorities remain committed to maintaining security and preventing potential acts of terrorism.
