new-nyc-program-delivers-1-200-monthly-to-60-vulnerable-youth

URGENT UPDATE: New York City has just launched a groundbreaking initiative to combat homelessness, providing $1,200 monthly to 60 vulnerable young people aged 18 to 24 as part of the new Cash with Care program. This program, backed by the New York City Council, aims to address housing insecurity and is set to run for nine months.

The $1.5 million program, established in partnership with Covenant House New York (CHNY), is designed to empower young individuals facing homelessness while offering vital support services. Speaker Adrienne Adams emphasized the importance of investing in youth, stating, “When we invest in young people, we’re investing in the future of our entire city.”

The Cash with Care program is not just about financial assistance. Each participant will receive a monthly cash stipend of $1,200 alongside a one-time payment of $5,000, accessible at any time during the program. This direct cash assistance aims to foster self-sufficiency and stability among young individuals battling housing insecurity.

“By supporting young people who are experiencing housing insecurity with resources and funding, we are taking an important step to advance the health, safety, and well-being of all New Yorkers,” said Adams. The program is designed to track participant progress, including gains in permanent housing, food security, and reduced debt, as assessed by CHNY.

Council Member Crystal Hudson, who sponsored the legislation, praised the program’s potential impact. “I have seen firsthand the success of the pilot program for expectant mothers facing housing insecurity. This new initiative will provide essential resources for young New Yorkers to secure permanent housing and meet basic needs such as food and utilities,” she stated.

This program marks a significant shift in how New York City addresses the urgent issue of youth homelessness. With the program officially launched, the city is poised to make a lasting impact on the lives of these young individuals.

As the program unfolds, officials will closely monitor outcomes and adjust strategies to maximize effectiveness. The immediate focus is on the health and stability of these young people, aiming to ensure they lead lives marked by dignity and security.
