Former President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a significant meeting at Mar-a-Lago on Sunday, focusing on a potential peace plan for Ukraine as the conflict with Russia continues. The two leaders discussed the ongoing war during a roughly two-and-a-half-hour session, which followed a productive phone call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Both leaders expressed optimism about reaching a resolution. Zelenskyy indicated that American and Ukrainian delegates had made substantial progress, stating that they were “at 90% agreement” on a proposed 20-point peace plan. He emphasized the necessity of security guarantees for Ukraine, a critical point in the ongoing discussions.
Trump noted their conversations with several European leaders, including those from France, Finland, Poland, Norway, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Germany. Discussions also involved the presidents of NATO and the European Commission, highlighting a collaborative approach to resolving the conflict.
Zelenskyy and Trump acknowledged the complexity of territorial issues in the Donbas region, describing them as a “very tough question.” Trump pointed out that some territories have been seized, while others may still be contested.
When asked about the timeline for a potential resolution to the conflict, Trump suggested that if negotiations proceeded positively, an agreement could be reached in a matter of weeks. “In a few weeks, we may know one way or the other,” he remarked, underscoring the uncertain nature of the situation.
Discussions at Mar-a-Lago included key members of their delegations, such as White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Trump did not set a specific deadline for a peace agreement but asserted that the primary objective was to end the war.
Both leaders remain committed to seeing peace in the region, with Trump stating, “You gotta make a deal … Too many people dying.” The meeting is seen as a critical step in advancing discussions for lasting peace in Ukraine.
Trump is scheduled to host Zelenskyy and other European leaders in Washington in January 2024, further emphasizing the international focus on the conflict and the collaborative efforts required to resolve it.
