Joseph Daniel Korshalla, a respected microbiologist and passionate outdoor enthusiast, passed away on December 9, 2025, at the age of 89. A long-time resident of Weatherly, Pennsylvania, Korshalla significantly contributed to the field of microbiology, particularly in the development of novel antibiotic compounds.

Born on April 12, 1936, in Larksville, Pennsylvania, Korshalla was the son of Joseph Daniel Korshalla and Anna (Petroski) Korshalla. He pursued higher education diligently, earning a Bachelor of Science in biology from Kings College, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, in 1958, followed by a Master of Science in microbiology from St. John’s University, Jamaica, New York, in 1960. His professional career included roles at Lederle Laboratories, American Cyanamid, and Pfizer in Pearl River, New York, where he focused on research and development, as well as the industrial manufacturing of antibiotics.

Outside of his scientific endeavors, Korshalla was known for his love of nature. He was an accomplished fly-fisherman, crafting his own flies and often fishing in the pristine waters of the Catskills and the Pocono regions. In addition, he had a creative side that manifested through his garden and his watercolor paintings, which were cherished by family and friends.

Korshalla’s commitment to his community was evident in his later years when he volunteered to assist elderly and disabled individuals by providing transportation to medical appointments. His legacy extends beyond his professional achievements, highlighting his dedication to helping others.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Jean Hayes Korshalla, and his sister, Mary Danielle Korshalla. He is survived by his daughter, Lauren E. Korshalla, who resides in Houston, Texas, as well as his sister Anne (Korshalla) King and her husband Bernard King, both of whom live in Dallas, Pennsylvania.
