URGENT UPDATE: The Amherst Comets showcased their strength with a decisive win against the Lorain Titans, clinching a 70-59 victory on December 23. This win marks an impressive 6-1 record for the Comets as they head into the holiday break.
In a game filled with intensity, the Comets struggled initially, with six ties and six lead changes. However, a powerful second half propelled them past the Titans. “We talked about it at halftime and said that we were not physical enough, like we normally are,” said Comets coach Pat Bray. His team responded with a dynamic third-quarter performance.
Amherst entered halftime with a narrow 34-31 lead and quickly built on this advantage. A strong 11-2 run was ignited by standout guard Stanley Robinson, who scored 20 points in total. “When I make one shot, I already know that I am going to keep going,” Robinson remarked after the game. His pivotal three-pointer helped push the score to 46-38 in favor of Amherst.
Despite a valiant effort from Lorain’s Jeremiah Daniels and Javell Morris, who scored 22 and 23 points respectively, the Titans were unable to maintain momentum. “The referees let us play, and it really was not in our favor to let us play,” said Lorain coach Matthew Kielian, highlighting his team’s struggles against Amherst’s physical defense.
Amherst dominated the turnover battle, recording just six turnovers compared to Lorain’s 17. This defensive pressure was key to the Comets’ success, allowing them to capitalize on their opponent’s mistakes.
With this victory, Amherst not only secured their third consecutive win but also solidified their position as a force in the Southwestern Conference, remaining undefeated at 3-0. “This group is really fun, but the thing about them is that they do not get too high and never get too low,” Bray added, praising his team’s resilience.
Meanwhile, the Titans dropped to 1-7 on the season, facing an uphill battle as they prepare to host Avon Lake on December 27. The Comets will look to continue their strong run against Keystone on December 30.
This thrilling game is a testament to the competitive spirit of high school basketball, and fans will be eager to see how both teams perform in their upcoming matchups.
