UPDATE: Waste Management of Iowa has just released urgent guidelines for holiday recycling as residents of Creston prepare for the festive season. With Christmas and New Year’s around the corner, the community is encouraged to adopt sustainable practices for managing leftover decorations and gift wrap.
As families unwrap gifts, confusion often arises regarding what can be recycled. To streamline this process, Matt McGurn, WM Recycling Operations Director, stated, “We are committed to helping Creston have a successful and sustainable holiday season. Following our specific guidelines will ensure efficient management of materials and support a strong circular economy.”
Key Recycling Guidelines:
– **Wrapping Paper:** Only plain wrapping paper is recyclable. Avoid recycling paper with foil, glitter, or plastic coatings—these should be saved for reuse. Consider using alternatives like newspaper, old wallpaper, or fabric.
– **Holiday Bags:** Similar to wrapping paper, plain paper bags are recyclable, while glossy or glittery bags are not. Reusing holiday bags is highly encouraged.
– **Ribbons and Bows:** These festive items are not recyclable. Residents should focus on reusing or donating them.
– **Tissue Paper:** This is also non-recyclable. Instead, consider saving tissue paper for future celebrations like birthdays or anniversaries.
– **Holiday Lights:** Important to note, holiday lights cannot be placed in curbside recycling bins. WM emphasizes that reuse is the best option for these non-recyclable items.
IMPORTANT SERVICE UPDATE: Due to the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, trash and recycling pickup will experience delays over the next two weeks. Residents with a Thursday trash pickup will see their service pushed to Friday, while all recycling will be moved to Saturday. Normal service will resume on January 5.
By following these updated recycling guidelines, Creston residents can contribute to a more sustainable holiday season and support environmental efforts in their community. Act now to ensure a greener celebration! Share this information widely to help spread awareness.
