UPDATE: The Baxter boys wrestling team showcased their talent this weekend, competing fiercely at two separate tournaments. Just announced, Kinnick Poage and Ruger Kincaid led the Bolts to impressive finishes, marking a significant moment for the team.
At the Ron Dodd Viking Invitational in Northwood on December 9, 2023, the Bolts secured an eighth-place finish against tough out-of-state competition. Poage emerged as a standout, taking the runner-up position in the 113-pound category. He achieved a remarkable 4-1 record for the day, recording four pins in under 50 seconds each. His only loss came by fall despite leading 3-2 at one point. With this performance, Poage’s season record improves to 12-2.
Kincaid also made headlines, finishing third in the 190-pound weight class. After a tough opening match that ended 20-9 against him, he bounced back with three consecutive pins, showcasing his determination and skill. Kincaid’s day included a rapid first-period victory for his first two wins, with his final pin coming while he was ahead 14-1. His record now stands at 8-3 this season.
The team scored a total of 48 points in the ten-team field, with out-of-state teams dominating the rankings. Dover-Eyota claimed the title with 215 points, narrowly edging Westfield’s 208 points. Other top contenders included Highland with 179 points and Central Springs with 152.5 points.
Just days later, on December 12, 2023, the Bolts competed again at the Montezuma Invitational, further demonstrating their prowess. Poage, Kincaid, and teammate Maddox Peters combined for an impressive 7-3 record overall. Poage again shone brightly, finishing second at 106 pounds with a 2-1 record, both victories coming via pin in under 1:50.
Peters also secured a second-place finish at 175 pounds, going 2-1 with two quick pins. Kincaid’s performance at 215 pounds was equally noteworthy, finishing 3-1 with three pins, including a rapid 42-second win in his first match. His only defeat came against Class 1A No. 2, Braxton Plants from Montezuma.
The Bolts’ efforts at both tournaments underscore their growing competitiveness in the wrestling landscape. With each match, they are not just building their records but also showcasing their resilience and teamwork.
