On December 19, 2023, Rydell Automotive provided three pre-owned vehicles to clients of the Community Violence Intervention Center (CVIC) during the fourth annual Angels on Wheels event in Grand Forks. This initiative aims to empower individuals facing significant transportation barriers, allowing them greater independence and mobility.
Desiree Freadrich, one of the recipients, expressed her gratitude, describing the experience as “amazing” and “overwhelming.” She shared that having a vehicle will greatly assist her in attending appointments and other essential activities without relying on others for transportation.
“The Angels on Wheels program reminds us of the profound impact reliable transportation can have on someone’s life,” said Ben Cahalan, General Manager of Rydell. “These vehicles are tools for healing, stability, and new beginnings. We are honored to support CVIC in helping community members move forward with confidence.”
Rydell donated one vehicle from each of its Grand Forks dealerships: Rydell GM, Rydell Honda Nissan, and Rydell Toyota. Sheila Morris, CVIC’s Vice President of Advocacy, highlighted the significance of the program for clients who have experienced trauma from domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, or stalking. “Transportation has been a huge barrier for them, so matching them with a vehicle is a critical step in their self-sufficiency,” she stated.
In addition to the vehicles, recipients received Rydell gift cards for future oil changes and service needs, along with $300 gas cards donated by Northdale Oil. Local businesses, including Darcy’s Café and L&M Meats, contributed gift baskets as part of the event. Safe Kids Grand Forks also provided car seats for children and assisted with on-site installation.
Cydney Richards, another recipient, expressed her excitement about receiving a vehicle. “It feels really good. It’s mind-blowing, actually,” she said. Previously relying on Uber for transportation, Richards is particularly grateful for the new car during the winter months. “I can’t wait to take it for a spin,” she added.
Both Freadrich and Richards acknowledged the efforts of CVIC, Rydell, and all those involved in making the Angels on Wheels event a success. Morris noted that the center collaborates closely with Rydell to ensure clients receive vehicles that align with their individual needs, taking into account factors such as employment, living situations, and family circumstances.
To qualify for a vehicle, CVIC clients must possess a valid driver’s license and sufficient financial resources to secure car insurance. Morris reiterated the transformative nature of these vehicles, stating they will enable the recipients to commute to their jobs, transport their children to school, and attend medical appointments, ultimately enhancing their self-sufficiency.
“Without transportation, things can become extremely difficult, and this truly makes a momentous impact on their lives,” she concluded. Through the Angels on Wheels program, Rydell continues to demonstrate its commitment to fostering community support and resilience.
