Russell Brand openly criticized his ex-wife, Katy Perry, regarding her new relationship with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during an event in Phoenix on December 18, 2023. While addressing the audience at a Turning Point USA gathering, Brand, 50, expressed his disapproval of the pairing, stating, “I was okay with Orlando Bloom, but Justin Trudeau? Come on, man! Don’t put me in a category with that guy! That globalist stooge.”

Despite his remarks about Trudeau, who is 53, Brand took a moment to appreciate Perry’s parents, who were present in the room. He expressed his affection for them, saying, “I love Mary Perry… God bless you, thank you for bringing the message to me.” This shows a nuanced perspective, as Brand maintains respect for his former in-laws even while being critical of their daughter’s current partner.

Brand and Perry were married from 2010 until late 2011, a relationship that ended dramatically when Perry learned about the divorce via text message while on tour. Reflecting on their split in a June 2013 interview with Vogue, Perry revealed that she had not heard from Brand since that notification. “He’s a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him,” she stated at the time.

Earlier in 2023, Brand discussed their marriage breakdown on his podcast, “Stay Free with Russell Brand.” He remarked, “The reasons that a marriage didn’t work are the normal human reasons marriages don’t work, and I have nothing but respect for her.” He characterized Perry as not entirely normal due to her immense fame but affirmed that she was not involved in anything “nefarious.”

Following her marriage to Brand, Perry entered into a relationship with Orlando Bloom, with whom she shares a five-year-old daughter named Daisy. Bloom and Perry’s relationship faced challenges, and they ultimately separated earlier in 2023. Reports of Perry’s romance with Trudeau began circulating over the summer before the couple confirmed their relationship by going “Instagram official” in December.

In a recent Instagram post from December 6, Perry shared moments from her time in Japan during her Lifetime Tour, featuring photographs that included Trudeau. The caption read, “Tokyo times on tour and more,” highlighting their shared experiences, including a sushi dinner date. The couple also made headlines when they were photographed with former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Kishida noted on his Instagram, “Former Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau came to Japan with his partner Katy Perry and had lunch with us.”

Kishida emphasized the importance of Canada as a partner to Japan across various areas, including politics and culture, reiterating the significance of their continuing friendship.

Brand’s comments reflect a complex relationship with Perry, marked by both respect for her family and critique of her current choices. As both figures navigate their respective lives and careers, the public continues to follow their journeys closely.
