Fayette County’s wrestling scene is experiencing a resurgence as Albert Gallatin High School triumphed over Laurel Highlands in a recent dual meet, showcasing a promising future for both teams. The match, held on December 6, 2023, ended with a decisive score of 68-6 in favor of Albert Gallatin, signaling a positive trend for the sport in the area.

The dual meet began with a technical fall by Colin Rockwell at the heavyweight division, giving Albert Gallatin an early 5-0 lead. As the matches progressed, the Colonials quickly extended their advantage with strong performances, including a 55-second fall by freshman Greyson Morris at 114 pounds, and a commanding 15-0 technical fall by Roman Smith at 189 pounds. Coach Duane Dupont, who has been involved in the sport for over three decades, expressed optimism about the current roster, which includes a mix of experienced upperclassmen and promising underclassmen.

“We are starting to get those guys coming through the feeder system now, so we have some kids with experience but we are still fairly young,” Dupont stated. His words reflect a growing confidence in the program, which has faced challenges over the years, including periods of low participation.

Coach Jimmy Harris, leading the Mustangs, acknowledged the progress his team has made despite competing independently this season. “The numbers are looking up, but our most experienced wrestlers are in their second year, so we just have to keep working one minute at a time,” Harris remarked. He is hopeful that Laurel Highlands will rejoin the WPIAL next year, emphasizing the importance of building a solid foundation for future success.

The dual meet showcased several standout performances from Albert Gallatin wrestlers. Senior Nick Hillyard registered a 19-4 technical fall at 172 pounds, while teammate Wyatt Wilson secured a victory in his first varsity match at 160 pounds by pinning his opponent in 1:39. Dupont’s approval was evident as he highlighted Wilson’s achievement, marking a positive step for the young athlete.

Despite the loss, Harris praised the efforts of his wrestlers, particularly noting the potential of newcomer Marion Jones, who won by fall in just 30 seconds at 215 pounds. “He is very athletic,” Harris added, expressing optimism for Jones’ development as he gains experience in the sport.

Looking ahead, Albert Gallatin is preparing for a busy schedule, with the Southmoreland Holiday Classic set for December 29-30 and the TriCADA tournament on January 2-3 at West Greene Junior/Senior High School. The Colonials are also gearing up for their Section 8-3A opener against Latrobe on January 7 at 19:00.

Laurel Highlands will continue their campaign by wrestling Yough on Monday at 19:00 before participating in the upcoming holiday tournaments. Harris emphasized the goal of filling the schedule to provide ample competition for his wrestlers, a crucial component for their growth in the sport.

As both programs navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead, the spirit of competition remains strong in Fayette County wrestling, with coaches and athletes alike looking forward to a brighter future.
