URGENT UPDATE: The Rocklin Unified School District has just announced a ban on Class 2 e-bikes, effective February 2, 2026, impacting hundreds of students across its 12 elementary and two middle schools. This decision follows a troubling increase in crashes and safety concerns linked to e-bikes with throttles that can reach speeds of up to 20 mph.

The ban, which affects numerous students who rely on these e-bikes for transportation, was prompted by a series of close calls and injuries reported in the area. Rocklin Police Chief Rustin Banks stated, “We’ve had some really, really close calls here. And we’ve had a significant amount of hospitalized e-bike riders.” The district is taking decisive action as they work to ensure the safety of young riders.

Officials have observed a significant rise in e-bike usage among students over the past two years, but this trend has come with alarming consequences. The district has been collaborating with local police to educate families and students about safe riding practices, even conducting e-bike patrols to monitor reckless behavior. However, these efforts have not been enough to curb the rising dangers.

Some students, like 13-year-old Ben Higbee, expressed disappointment with the ban, explaining, “I don’t really like it. I don’t know how I’m going to get to school some days because my parents are working.” The district aims to balance safety with student mobility, encouraging the use of traditional bicycles instead.

Starting in December 2025, the district will implement an education and grace period to inform families about the policy changes. This will be followed by a warning phase in January 2026, where students with non-compliant e-bikes will receive warnings. Full enforcement will begin on February 2, 2026, with potential consequences including detentions and required meetings with school and police officials.

The district emphasizes that the goal is not punishment but rather the safety of all students. Chief of Communications Sundeep Dosanjh stated, “We strive to provide the best educational experience for all of our students and families in Rocklin Unified. And that also includes making everyone aware of how to safely use transportation options.”

Parents are being advised to consider this ban before purchasing e-bikes as holiday gifts, making it crucial for families to stay informed about the new regulations. The district continues to prioritize student safety while recognizing the challenges faced by young riders.
