UPDATE: Massachusetts taxpayers are receiving rebates today, with amounts reaching up to $7,000 for some individuals. Governor Charlie Baker’s administration has triggered an automatic payment process affecting approximately 3 million taxpayers following a state law that caps annual revenue.
Payments are rolling out today and will continue until December 15, prioritizing those who filed their 2021 tax returns. Recipients can expect a payment labeled “MASTTAXRFD” if they opted for direct deposit. Those receiving checks will have them mailed directly.
According to officials, around 500,000 payments will be distributed this week, with an additional 1 million scheduled for the following week. Most eligible taxpayers should see their rebates this month.
If you have yet to file your 2021 tax return, you still have time. File by September 15, 2023, to qualify for this round of payments, which will be issued about one month after filing. Notably, there is no cap on the rebate amounts, meaning higher earners will receive significantly larger refunds. For instance, individuals earning $35,000 could see around $200, while those earning over $1 million may receive upwards of $7,000.
In addition to the rebate news, Massachusetts has also implemented a new statewide ban on disposing of mattresses and textiles, including clothing and shoes, effective today. Officials state that while fines for individual violations will be minimal, they are promoting compliance through educational resources about recycling and donation options.
Amid these changes, the identification of the long-mysterious “Lady of the Dune” has emerged, with authorities confirming her identity as Ruth Marie Terry, a Tennessee native. Terry was tragically murdered at the age of 37, and while her killer remains unknown, officials hope the revelation will lead to new investigative developments.
As the state prepares for next week’s election, voters are reminded that the deadline for ballot submission is 5 p.m. today. If you’re still holding onto your ballot, drop it off in person to ensure it is counted.
