URGENT UPDATE: Stockton University President Joe Bertolino has secured a significant boost in his salary, with a new contract granting him a yearly pay of $450,000, reflecting a $50,000 increase. This contract was just approved by the university’s Board of Trustees and is set to commence on July 1, 2026.

Under the new agreement, Bertolino is also eligible for an annual performance-based incentive bonus ranging from $50,000 to $100,000, starting in 2027. The news comes as Stockton University continues to expand its educational mission, particularly with the development of its Atlantic City campus.

Bertolino, who transitioned from his role at Southern Connecticut State University to lead Stockton in 2023, expressed his gratitude for the board’s trust. “I’m honored and deeply grateful to the board of trustees for their continued trust and support,” he stated. “Serving as president of Stockton University is a privilege, and I remain committed to leading with care, integrity, and purpose.”

The contract also includes a one-year extension option, demonstrating a commitment to stability in the university’s leadership. In addition to his salary, Bertolino will receive $5,500 per month for housing expenses, along with an annual contribution of $70,000 to a deferred payment plan for each year he remains in office.

Since taking the presidency, Bertolino has initiated a task force to evaluate the future of the Atlantic City campus, which has seen recent investments including a $70 million expansion in housing facilities. His leadership has been noted for its focus on student success and community engagement.

“President Bertolino has proven himself to be a steady, compassionate, and visionary leader for Stockton University,” remarked Jose Lozano, chair of the university’s Board of Trustees. “His deep commitment to student success, inclusive excellence, and community partnerships reflect the very best of who we are as an institution.”

This pay increase aligns with broader trends in New Jersey, where compensation for university presidents varies significantly. For instance, Rutgers University recently appointed President William Tate IV with a record base salary of $1.1 million, highlighting the competitive landscape for higher education leadership.

As Stockton University embraces this new chapter under Bertolino’s presidency, the focus will remain on enhancing educational opportunities and fostering a supportive community for students and faculty alike. With developments like these, the university is poised to continue making headlines in the coming years.
