On December 2, 2023, approximately 40 runners donned festive attire for the second annual Jingle Bell Dash in Kingston, New York, raising funds to support the Hudson Valley LGBTQ+ Community Center’s youth outreach initiatives. The event commenced on North Front Street, guiding participants through a scenic route spanning about eight blocks in the historic Stockade District.
Despite chilly temperatures, many participants showcased their holiday spirit, with some opting for more revealing outfits. Pre-run espresso martinis at Hotel Kinsley offered a warm boost to help runners brave the cold. The event drew inspiration from similar festive runs, including the Santa Speedo Sprint in Albany and the Jingle Bell Run in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
Boosting Community Engagement
Stephan Hengst, co-director of Big Gay Hudson Valley and one of the event organizers, noted that this year’s turnout was double that of 2022. “It takes about five minutes to go all the way around the block,” Hengst explained, detailing the route that included Wall, Front, and Fair Streets. “We wanted to create a fun and goofy event that also provides great visibility for the queer community.”
Funds raised during the dash specifically benefit the center’s Gen Q youth programs. Richard Heyl de Ortiz, executive director of the Hudson Valley LGBTQ+ Community Center, emphasized the importance of these initiatives. “We’re always here when a young person comes in, just to talk to someone. They can see our director of well-being services. We also do school outreach, supporting staff in how to best assist LGBTQ+ students,” he stated.
The center also hosts a Gen Z Drop-in event, providing a space for LGBTQ+ youth to connect and share experiences. Hengst expressed hopes for increased participation in the coming years, aiming to attract 100 participants for next year’s event. “Everyone participating today helped to raise funds to keep these programs going and to grow these programs,” he said.
Looking Ahead
As the Jingle Bell Dash continues to gain momentum, organizers are optimistic that the community will rally to support these crucial outreach programs. “It’s a perfect confluence of things,” Hengst added, highlighting the blend of festive spirit and community engagement that defines the event.
