Kendaisha Price, a dedicated nursing student at Meridian Community College (MCC), has been awarded the Mississippi Nurses Foundation Scholarship valued at $1,000. The announcement was made shortly after Price completed an exam, surprising her with the news that recognized her hard work and determination.
Recognizing Dedication and Resilience
Price’s reaction was one of disbelief and joy. “Look at God, you’re kidding me,” she exclaimed upon hearing the news from her instructor, Dr. Holly Crain. This scholarship is aimed at nursing students enrolled in associate or baccalaureate programs throughout Mississippi, highlighting the importance of professional character, leadership, and service in the selection process.
“You deserve it. You work so hard, and you’ve overcome so many things,” Dr. Crain told Price, acknowledging her perseverance. The scholarship serves as a recognition not only of her academic achievements but also of her personal journey. Price reflected on her path, stating, “Oh, my God. That’s right on time. God, you’re so good to me.”
A Journey of Personal Growth
Price has aspired to be a nurse since the ninth grade, inspired by her stepmother. A pivotal moment in her education came when a teacher emphasized the significance of grades, which motivated her to excel and secure scholarships after high school. She initially attended Dillard University in New Orleans before returning to MCC, where her nursing education faced interruptions due to personal challenges.
“That was hard,” Price admitted about her time away from nursing school. Following her absence, she focused on her family and career. After giving birth to her child in 2023, Price made the bold decision to return to her studies just days after delivery. “It felt like coming home,” she said, expressing her gratitude for the support from familiar faculty members who had previously taught her.
With plans to graduate in December 2025, Price aspires to work in psychiatric nursing. “It’s where I think I can do the most good,” she remarked. Her passion for nursing extends beyond a single specialty; she expressed a genuine love for interacting with patients and providing care.
The Mississippi Nurses Foundation Scholarship holds significant meaning for Price. “I’m blessed. I’m thankful. I can’t wait to frame it,” she said. She emphasized that the nursing program at MCC is more than just an academic experience; it fosters a supportive environment where students are recognized as individuals. “I’m not just a number here; they know my name, they support me, and they care.”
Price hopes that future students will see MCC as she does—a nurturing place that prepares and encourages aspiring nurses. “Who wouldn’t want to find their wings at MCC?” she stated. “I’m finding mine every day.”
