morgantown-faces-martinsburg-in-class-aaaa-state-championship-showdown

Morgantown High School will compete for a state football championship for the first time in two decades, facing off against a familiar rival, Martinsburg High School. The game is scheduled for 12:00 PM on Friday, December 1, 2025, at Laidley Field in Charleston, marking the beginning of a championship weekend featuring four title games.

The Mohigans, with a record of 12-1, have displayed one of the strongest defenses in the state, allowing an average of just 11.8 points per game over the season. Their sole loss this year came against Martinsburg, in a decisive 34-6 defeat on October 10. Morgantown head coach Sean Biser acknowledged the challenge posed by the Bulldogs, stating, “Martinsburg is so athletic and long on the perimeter. They really challenge you and execute well on all sides of the ball.”

Martinsburg’s offensive strength lies in the dynamic junior duo of quarterback Brian Dick and wide receiver Boston Todd. This pair has connected for 48 receptions, accumulating 1,100 yards and 18 touchdowns. Todd also leads the Bulldogs in rushing, accruing 1,076 yards on 166 carries with six rushing touchdowns. Biser emphasized the need for a disciplined defensive approach against such talent: “We have to do our jobs and have good discipline, and make sure everyone is communicating every play.”

Morgantown’s quarterback, Maddox Twigg, has proven to be a key player this season, amassing over 3,000 total yards and 41 touchdowns. His playoff performances have been particularly impactful, including a standout game against Spring Mills where he contributed to 254 of 263 offensive yards in a thrilling 34-33 double-overtime victory. Twigg also excelled defensively, leading his team with 11 tackles in that match. Following that, he helped secure a 52-21 victory against Jefferson, scoring six touchdowns while making nine tackles.

“Maddox has progressed naturally as a player and athlete,” Biser noted. “He’s a winner and wants the ball in his hands with the opportunity to impact the game. We are pretty comfortable with giving him the reins to lead the team.”

One critical matchup to watch will be Boston Todd against the Morgantown secondary. Keeping Todd from making big plays downfield will be essential for the Mohigans. Senior player Carter Cooper shared insights on the game strategy, stating, “We need to execute better. I don’t think they’ll do anything that surprises us or catches us off guard. We just need to stay disciplined and make sure we are swarming the ball.”

As the anticipation builds for the Class AAAA state championship, both teams bring impressive credentials and a determination to claim the title. Morgantown aims to overcome previous challenges against a formidable opponent, while Martinsburg seeks to extend its winning streak. As kickoff approaches, fans from both sides are ready to witness a clash that could define the legacies of these high school football programs.
